i just chnge the front brakes and pulled my wheels in the rear, the brakes look fine and so do the drums (new 04) the problem is when i get started in the morning or at anytime the truck sits , the rear brakes seam to lock up , then after a few moments it stops. do i have a vacum leak or a booster problem? has anybody had this problem or heard of it? a little help please
my rear brakes used to lock up first thing in the morning. when i released the parking brake you had to rock it for them to release. i took the shoes off and lubed the backing plate at the points where the brake shoes contact it w/ high temp grease. it fixed my problem.
My 88 150 did that when it was new, I brought it back and they put a taper on the top and bottom of the shoes becouse there wasn't one. It didn't do much then they told me that they had to change the brake hose from the frame to the axle. Never did figure out what that was saposto do. It did nothing. the only thing I figured out was surface rust. So when it came time to the brakes I did not put a metlic shoe on. I used organic material shoe and the problem went away.
I've never had a problem with rust doing that so I don't know if that is the cause but I do know that when you get fluid on those shoes they will lock up. Make sure there isn't a brake line or wheel cylinder leak. Another thing could be an axle leak. Thats what I had, the seal on the end of the axle was bad and the oil was leaking out of the axle seal onto my shoes and causing them to lock up initially.
I had the same problem with my rear brakes. I took it to the local Midas and they changed the shoes, turned the drums and replaced all the hardware as well as flushing the entire system. $175 later my brakes were like new. Just wish I had the time to do it myself.
