2002 Ford Excursion - Speedometer not working

2002 Ford Excursion - Speedometer not working
Hi all,
I have researched this and I think I have either an ABS or Variable Speed sensor but I need to get a confirmation.
For the first time today, the speedometer did not work. There were no other problems... driveability was fine, gauges fine. No SES light. No flashing OD light. The digital odometer is working.
Are these common symptoms for bad VSS that is bad or ???? It seems to me the odometer would be tied to the signal going to the speedometer.
