what does a shift lever bushing look like?
Well wouldnt you know the first weekend i have a chance to take my truck out for a spin it gets cut short by a shifting problem. My mechanic says the "shift lever bushing" needs to be replaced. (Better than needing a new tranny!)
Now I'd like to try to hunt down this part but I have no idea what the thing looks like. Can anyone help me out with a photo or a link to what it looks like? All Dan (mechanic) could tell me was that it's white plastic or nylon.
As always thanks for your help!

What kind of trans, auto or stick? Floor or column shift?
What was the nature of the failure?
That having been said, two parts (shift levers) of the same material (steel), rubbing together, will wear out very quickly. GENERALLY, a "bushing" is a sleeve fitted between 2 parts made of the same material to prevent wear of the shafts. S
aid bushing is made of a different material, usually something softer, i.e., bronze, plastic or the like.
MOST Ford shifter bushings FOR EXTERNAL Shifter SHAFTS (those outside the trans) are made of a type of nylon and "sort of" shaped like an old fashioned top hat ... with the top knocked out.
The cylinder portion of the top hat is pushed INTO one shifter arm ... the other shifter arm pushes into the hole in that top hat that you would fit your head into.
In this case not only does the "cylinder" of the Top hat protects the shafts from wear ... but also the BRIM of the hat provides a buffer between the two pieces of steel.
If you have an automatic transmission ... or a column shift manual ... these bushings whould only cost a couple bucks ... and probably 1/2 hour to replace.
If you have a manual trans with a FLOOR Mounted Shifter ... because the shifter links are INSIDE THE TRANS, it could cost a bit more.
BTW ... I don't know if you saw my posts regarding the interior of my truck ... but I followed your lead ... and it came out GREAT!!! Thank you very much.
AS soon as it stops raining in Georgia ... I'll get the engine back in the dang thing and get it done!
falcontamr it sounds like that is EXACTLY what is happening to my truck! thank you so much for the part info...i'm off to try to hunt it down!

My trans (T170FS RUG SROD) had a bushing gone bad ... Northwest was the only folks that even knew what I was talking about.
VERY knowledgeable ... these guys have EVERYTHING ... even part for old Dynaflo Transmissions.

(sigh) Where is the promised info?????
Is the M/T a 3 speed on the column, or a 4 speed on the floor?
3 speed manual: On the bottom of the steering column under the hood are the two manual control selector levers the shift rods from the trans attach to.
In each one of these levers is a nylon bushing, these =

Warner T-18 4 speed: The shift lever fits directly into the shift tower, a threaded cap retains it. There isn't any sort of shift lever bushing anywhere.
So..it has to be the 4 speed O/D.
The problem with the shift lever used with the 4 speed O/D was...it broke if you looked at it!
The shift lever is made from two separate parts, upper lever and lower lever. Two pins and nylon sleeves attach the upper section to the lower section.
So...what has happened? If the lever is wiggling around, it's possible the two nylon sleeves have broken apart the two pins fit into.
Or...more likely...it's this little darlin' =
The bottom of the shift lever has a bushing on it, but... it's actually inside the transmission.
Fits between the actual shift lever and the "Gearshift Shaft Offset Lever Assy" (= actual Ford parts catalog description).

What is the difference between D9BZ-A & D9BZ-B? Nothing!
Ford changed the package quantity in the late 1980's of 10's of 1000's of small parts.
When they did that, they changed the part numbers suffix!

That E3ZZ part number doesn't even appear in the truck parts catalog.
What's happening is the gears are slipping out...it'll pop out of first (and give me heart-failure every time)...and then it sometimes cant find second...
i have a floor shifter as y'all figured out from my photos but I dont know for sure which one...will the shift pattern tell you? here's a pic of the shifter **** (in the jy i can never find a **** with this pattern)

it sounds like D9BZ7K453B or (A since there is no difference) is the part i need right?
As always, thanks y'all sooo much!

This is the bushing down at the bottom of the shifter:

I just replaced it in mine ... it was busted up pretty good ... I glued it together to take the picture ... which helped ID it for the parts guys.
The guys I got mine from called it a "saddle".
Like I said in an above post ... I got my from Northwest ... and they got a bunch of them in stock.
HOWEVER ... from your description of the symptoms, Em ... "popping out of 1st gear ... hard shifting or NO shifting into second ... I have to tell you you MIGHT be having a problem deep in the trans ... maybe the syncronizers AT LEAST.
If the bushing ... like mine ... is bad ... they should be able to replace the bushing without pulling the trans ...
If the bushing ain't bad ... they *probably* will want to rebuild the trans. This will be VERY costly ...
You *might* want to consider finding a used trans first.
If the trans MUST come out ... you *probably* should consider putting a clutch in it. I just put a new one in my Ford (since the engine and trans were out) the cost of a new clutch package was about $100.
BTW ... the pictures of my interior panels (that look GREAT!!!) can be found here:
Good Luck, let us know how you make out.
