you're starting to talk me into it bghnkinf250! my biggest problem is i dont have a garage big enough to work in...but you definitately have me thinking about how i can work it out
So basically, i'd need to get a different transmission altogether if i wanted to stop worrying about this little piece breaking. Or make a mold of one and have it cast in metal or something...

How long did the original last?
Uh...let's see...your truck is a 1980, it's 2009, so...
If it ain't broke, don't fix or worry about it.
Just don't speed shift the little darlin' cuz the trans...as I said, is a weak sister originally designed for 6 banger Fairmont/Zephyr's and Granada's.

It lasted that long because it was built in America!
This new one might be Chinese!!!!!!

my mechanic warned me about speed shifting too..guess i'll behave
seems it was a weird choice to put a fairmont/zeph/granada set-up in a work vehicle like a truck

It was the only trans like this Ford had at that time.
Here's the reason why Ford used this trans, if you don't recall, or are too young to know.
Prior to 1973, most ppl didn't give a hoot about gas mileage, cuz gas was cheap and plentiful.
In 1973, the first Arab Oil Embargo occured. Ppl were waiting in long gas lines at filling stations across the US because gas was (supposedly) in short supply.
After the Embargo ended, one gallon of regular gas which had been around 25 cents a gallon before 1973, soared to a buck a gallon. Now ppl were concerned about MPG.
Another Arab Oil Embargo occured in 1979, gas went up again (in LA LA Land, to a buck twenty five).
So...Ford began installing this weak sister of a car trans in F100/150's, Bronco's and E100/150's to improve gas mileage.
btw: If you think $1.00 or $1.25 seems cheap by today's figures, it was not cheap!
Back then, the US dollar was worth far more...than it is today!
After the first Embargo ended it, was the same old scenario you hear today. Ppl said they were gonna cut down on their driving, but...
