GIRLWITHATRUCK, sorry for the wrong part number. That's what my local ford dealership gave me, and that's what is listed on the exploded diagram. $20 and 4 days later I had the wrong part in hand.
ODDSHOT, Thanks for the pic, that's exactly what I'm after. Going to call Northwest now...
no worries! falcontamr...i was too quick on the ordering and orderd the wrong part too..ha! but i ordered the one Numberdummy gave the part number for at Green Sales Company as he suggested...super nice folks there...
update for oddshot and all y'all: i have the part on order from Green Sales Company which was one of the ones Numberdummy listed. SUPERnice folks shipped out the part and it should be here next week. Long way from them to Cali so it's taking a few days. Poor truck. It's killing me that i cant drive her!!

So I just received the part from Green Sales Company (great vendor, btw!) and am going to take it over to Dan (my mech.) today. Here are a couple of pics to go along with oddshot's one of the busted part. I cant BELIEVE that this part is made of plastic or nylon or whatever. Someone at Ford was not using their brain-pan when coming up with this idea.
I should have stuck something in the photos for scale but the part is about 1 3/4 x 7/8 x 7/8...it's a little shorter than the length of my thumb.

I think we're getting close to putting together a complete picture for anyone else who runs into this shifter problem.
whew! ok so the part went in and fixed the shifting problem. That is the (very) good news. The bad news is that my mech said that if it busts again, it's time to think about rebuilding the tranny. Well that just scares me. Cuz that cant possibly be cheap. What does that kind of thing even cost?
In the meantime though he told me to shift gentle and keep my fingers crossed. At least i can drive her again in time for the weekend! yay!
hey bghnkinf250...it's a good idea to keep my eye out for a used one..."transmission rebuild" sounds really scary but the rebuild kits i'm seeing look fairly straightforward...why's the rebuild so expensive? Is it crazy hard to do?

and i'm sure it requires a whole set of tools i dont have. Guess I'll have to really hope it doesnt break for awhile and keep my eyes open for a used tranny.

Keeping an eye out is a good idea for now, look around on craigslist for people who are selling their trucks for parts, this way you can get a story behind the transmission, kind of hard to get any information from a junkyard tranny.
Do i need to find the exact same tranny i have (according to Numberdummy it's the Ford RUG) or can I as easily swap in somethign else? I def would want to stay with a manual floor shift though.

I think (but don't quote me) you can use any of the manual transmissions, but don't quote me on that.
If you pick up a used tranny, you can also try to get a manual. Why not give it a shot in trying a rebuild by yourself? You will need snap ring pliers (I think for one of those), but no other real special tools! You also have a lot of peolpe here willing to help you with any problems you run into!
