1985 ford light problems

So long story short someone was a hatchet *** when they tried to install a trailer brake, and now my reverse lights come on when I hit the brake pedal, but don't come on when I put the trans in reverse (c6 trans) what I want to do is put red light tape over the white square part of the tail light lense so it will look like it has brake lights, but I need reverse lights still, so how do I hook it up to come on when I put the truck in reverse, I don't want to put a toggle switch on it if I don't have to, any suggestions

If it were me, I'd re-wire it and get it working right. Patching it by putting red tape over the clear may work short term, but the red tape fades, falls off, etc and you are just asking to get stopped. Add in the rigged reverse lights and it just complicates things.

It isn't too difficult to re-wire the back end and well worth it in the end. There is usually a 'reverse' switch on the transmission that triggers the back up lights. The service manual shows all the wiring and the MPC should show the switch. (I'll take a look when I get a chance)

Why add to the 'hatchet ***' job; do it right and you won't have to worry about it.

Just my 2 cents

I'm trying to sell it this week end, I'll look and see where the reverse switch is, but then I'd be left without brake lights rather than reverse lights, I could wire the aftermarket reverse lights to the switch so I don't have to deal with a toggle switch, I'm just stumped, they have cut up in the steering colum, the harness, underneath the dash, everywhere, thanks for the info

I traced the wires, but I think I now need to look at the reverse light switch, your diagram is great help though
