Question Need FTE help!!

A friend of mine has a problem with her truck. She got fuel the other day, she was on E, and a few miles down the road it started to spit and sputter, wouldn't idiel, and no power. She thinks bad fuel. She changed the fuel filter and no change. I was thinking either a fuel pump ( not knowing if the truck would run at all with a bad or dead pump) or a clog in the mixing chamber in the tank. She said no CEL, but I am going to pull codes anyways. Any ideas before I head over there, whitch I am leaving in just over an hour so I hope I can get some help. OH and how do I check the fuel pump if thats the cause.

Truck is a 99 6speed, not sure if its a early or late. Thanks peeps

Though you didn't specify what engine she has, be absolutely certain that she put the correct fuel into it.

Diesel engines don't like gasoline, and gassers don't drink diesel fuel.

Or maybe I'm just thinking too simply....

LOL she did add diesel fuel. Wish it was that easy, but that would be bad. They did suck all the fuel out the tank incase is was a bad batch or something but I get fuel at the same place sometimes.

and yes its a 7.3, thats why I'm asking you guys...

That was my first thought as well, Pop. If the fuel was correct, I wonder since she ran it down so low that some junk in the bottom of the tank was sucked up into the pickup foot screen and causing the fueling issue. Very common problem when you run these trucks that low. Too much of a coincidence that it went to E, filled and now having issues. Plus, blocked fuel lines will not throw a CEL code.

Mine did when I had bad fuel. "Fuel Restriction" -- P1142.

Thanks for that code. So it very well could be the fuel pick up.

You might pull the fuel filter cap and check the level of the fuel..

What would the Level in the fuel filter bowl have anything to do with it? Thats fills up with fuel when you turn the key on right?

Sure could. This was right after I did my Hutch mod too. Saved my **** from a tow bill! I limped it off the highway and changed the filter in the parts store parking lot. Here's what it looked like:

Tank takes about 15 mins to drop, I can talk you through it, or type you through it, but it is a breeze. If she did run it out, wouldn't it be easiest to start with the fuel filter on the motor?

Pat's right. Let's rule out the other stuff before tearing into the tank. Fuel filter, pump, etc...

OK this is what we came up with code wise,

1280
1209
1282
1211

They are all a ICP code. Now I am not sure where that is at but I think its on the oil rail on the right of the motor? If that is it we pulled it out and put in another from a good running truck and it still rumped and fell on its face. They said it runs great wide open.

I would take this truck if it was a 4 door, it only had 57K miles and its a 99 build date of 5/99. Its a 6 speed also.....

So what you guys think????

ICP codes can be thrown from a fuel restriction too, since the PCM will still try to increase fuel volume to the injectors (through the ICP) even if the fuel supply is lacking.

Yes, the ICP is the sensor on the inboard side of the front drivers head. If you unplug it, the truck should run, buy you'll get the CEL and a 1280 code. If there's no noticeable difference with the ICP sensor plugged in or unplugged, introducing your friend to the in tank mods might be the smart thing to do.
