P0488 is a code for the egr throttle plate, usually means it is sticking. Try pulling the turbo connection off and look down the intake to see if the butterfly throttle is sticking. When you turn the key on, the throttle is supposed to cycle close then open and stay open. If not, I would try replacing the throttle plate assembly.
It has a new EGR valve and it has been deleted at the exhaust pipe and at the cooler. I took the plate off and put it back on and still has the code. My SCT scanner from spartan is some how able to deleat that code but I can't seem to get the help from Spartan for some reason. Thanks
You took what plate off? The problem may be in the programming. Later model trucks did not have an egr throttle plate, they used a scoop in the exhaust to collect the exhaust gas. Perhaps its throwing a false code.
It is a false code. I removed my throttle plate because it was never used in the strategy from almost day one plus it was a restriction in the airflow. I now have just an elbow and the sensor wire is taped up in the engine compartment. I have ID tunes and the only time the code shows up is if another code of some kind is present. It means nothing, especially if you have an EGR delete. FWIW--Spartan can no longer tune SCT. If you want SCT tunes call Eric at Innovative.

I would like some how to git ride of the check engine lite. Is it easy to get tunes from Eirc? Thanks Troy
You have an 04 with a CEL from a P0488 code??? If that's the only thing you're scanning for codes with then you need to try another scanner. I've never had a CEL on my 04 for a P0488--in fact I have that code set now. SCT is virtually worthless for code scanning. Try an autozone or advance autoparts, or better yet a Ford dealer.
Yes, it's very easy to get tunes from Eric. Since you already know your strategy, go to the innovative diesel website and shoot him an email or an order. You'll probably have them by tonight.

Out of those 3, a Ford dealer is probably going to be your best bet at finding out all the codes that your truck my have. It's the most costly(typically 100 a pop), but the best place to get it done.
I'll refrain from my usual plug about what scan reader to get at this time, but I can give it if the OP wants it.
AZ here, doesn't scan codes anymore. They said it was now co. policy.
I wonder if it's a local thing for y'all. I was just in Autozone last week and they were still pulling codes then. Unless they made a switch this week.

I did use a auto zone scanner. I worked for other codes but that 488 code comes right back at me. My SCT scanner won't read codes but will delete them or it did last time.
Interesting. I would be very tempted to get it on IDS to see what else is going on. I don't think a P0488 should set a CEL. At least it doesn't on my truck. Does it turn the light off when you clear the code?
