I have a 1969 Ford F100 that the hood is completely covered in surface rust but the underneath paint looks great. Is there a way to safely remove this rust? I have tried rubbing compound and a buffer but it isn't getting it all. What about clay, or does anyone has a sure fire method? Thanks!
I assure you that the paint underneath is in good shape. I have tested a few spots and all of them looked great, but it took a very long time to remove all of the rust with rubbing compound.
Has the truck been where it can get metal shavings or filings on top of the paint? If not the oxidation has to come from under the paint. You will have to stay on top of it to keep it looking good.
When you say rust is all over the hood, do you mean it looks like it's sprinkled on like pepper or that there are very thin areas of paint that the rust is coming through? Pics?
If it's just the specs then it may be the small metal filings that Larry touched on. My '00 Chebby started showing these when I started parking my truck near an active rail line at work. Got rid of mine with an orbital polisher and compound.
