Wondering if someone can help me. I have a 2005 f-150 with the 5.4L and there is a rattle in the top passenger side of the engine when I feather the throttle. That is the only time it does it consistently. I have also heard a very loud knocking while the truck is under strain while in drive and reverse. It sounds like a hammer on sheet metal. Any ideas?
The rattle from the passenger side sounds like the old cam phaser noise these engines have. But the loud knocking while under a strain? Where does it sound like it's comming form? engine or underneath?
It may be an exhaust manifold leak. I had a ticking noise coming from the passenger side wheel well that I had under strain and it was there constantly but more prominent in overdrive. I thought it was the cam phaser but I brought it in and turns out it was the exhaust leak. Sounds fine now!
I am using Motor Craft oil and filter. Both noises sound like they are coming from the same place. I was thinking it was the cam phasers also but it is not making that diesel noise at idle.
Something to try. Get some crankcase flush and flush your oil system. Do this twice if you have the time and $$$$$. Do both the oil and filter. Add some top shelf synthetic oil and a new Motocraft filter and check the noise again. Pay close attention to your filters and run your oil through a screen when you drain it. Look for pieces of metal and rubber(from a bad filter).
I just trashed a 05 5.4 by using an aftermarket filter. The upper end on the passenger side was rapping loudly due to a plugged oil port. I flushed it and the filter was loaded with metal and pieces of rubber. Refilled with Royal Purple and a Motocraft filter and all is quiet.....For now. Running on borrowed time now until the damaged parts give up....
