ok boys yall are the people who i turn to over goin to a dealer or overpriced mechanic shop. i was driving down the road tonight and my truck just idled down below idle rpm's and it was barely running and it shut off. and barely cut back on and barely limped home. this is the 3rd time its happened to me. the first time i went out and got a fuel filter and didnt have a chance to put it on till it did it again and i did it on the side of the highway. well obviously that aint whats wrong with it. so i run my codes with my superchip programmer and it came up with theses. p1670- EF Feedback Signal Not Detected, p1211- ICP Not Ctrllable - Pressure Above/Desired, and finally p1212- ICP Voltage Not at Expected Level. i know a little about engines but not near enough about diesels. please help!!!
Checking your batteries & alternator would be good, but from the symptoms, it sounds a bit like a failing CPS. I never remember the codes it gets.
Also, try unplugging the ICP. The ECU will use default values instead of "live" values, but it'll be just fine. That will tell you if the ICP is working properly and help eliminate one sensor as a possible source of trouble.
I never had a CPS problem, but I thought the classic symptom was it shuts off like you turned the key. Some of the codes read are because you have a tuner. 1211/1212, but the 1670 may be the code for the CPS. However, it sounds like a fueling issue to me. When my pre-filter plugged with a bad load of fuel, it did EXACTLY what you described. I limped it to a parts store right off the highway and put on a new filter. You might check your fuel pump, and or in-tank pickup/screens in the mixing chamber for debris, if you haven't done the in-tank mods yet.
It's in the tank, in the white housing hanging on the pickup tube. Yes, the tanks has to come out...
Doing the in-tank mods is actually easy. Takes time, and I had a WTF moment or two, but once done, you're like... "man, i was worked up over nothing!!". If you're dropping the tank, do the Hutch & Harpoon mods. I bought the ITP Tank kit with filter(s) and it took me maybe 2.5hrs working alone in my driveway at night to do it. Everything you need, quality, and one-stop shopping.
Hmmmm... good thinking Clux, which leads me to this thought - could it be that "winter fuel" is coming out early, and possibly with a new formula, thus causing these problems? It's WAAAYY early, but still...
I was wondering the same thing. There has been an epidemic of truck starving for fuel. I just changed my pre-pump filter too. If it plugs, then we'll know something is up. I have switched to using Shell fuel only since I changed the filter just to see if what I heard is correct about it being better. We'll see.
This "rash" of clogged filters, if there is one, may simply be due to the age of our trucks and the amount of fuel that has run through them.
Since we are not sure his filter is the culprit, we need to narrow it down some with the information we have. Since he has ICP codes it needs to be unplugged as suggested. See if it runs right then. If not, fuel system is a good next candidate.
When I severed my fuel line on the drag strip at RRE, the truck stayed running for a while, barely, but would not move forward or reverse. It ran poorly right up to when it died from fuel starvation.
Sooooo, if the ICP sensor is not the culprit, then the fuel system needs checking This could be anywhere including a failing pump. No sense dropping the tank until you have to. First step is to get a fuel pressure gauge on there and rule it in or out. Good luck.
Im going Negative on the CPS idea.... CPS issue dose not cause a truck to run poorly it just dies. The two injector related codes you got makes me think fueling issue (dirty screens) OR and IDM issue.
A quick & dirty pump check is to listen to it. Make sure it sounds normal -- slight buzz, no grinding sounds. Next, attach a short hose to the fuel bowl drain (if you haven't already), put it in a container, open the valve, and have a second person turn the key. Fuel volume coming out the drain should increase substantially. About like a garden hose. If it's just trickling, you have a fuel issue. Could still be the pump or restricted pickup though. To narrow it down, you could try pressurizing the tank slightly with compressed air and see if the fuel flow increases. If it doesn't, you likely have a restriction at the tank.
I'm not too sure I'd put much stock in the 1211/1212 codes. I always get the 1211. But then again, I think I have a weak HPOP. It's worth unplugging the ICP though just to make sure. It's too easy...
I agree that it sounds a LOT like a fuel starvation issue. Do this- Drain your fuel bowl, then pull out the filter. Make sure the fuel bowl is empty. Have some one turn on the key while you watch the fuel bowl. Without the engine running the pump will run about 15 seconds then shut off. If your fuel system is working anywhere close to normal in that 15 seconds your fuel bowl should get at least 1/2 filled or better. You can also take note of excessive bubbling or air coming out the fuel supply line indicating a possible bad air leak.
Second thought- What is your fuel level at? If you haven't ever messed with the fuel pickup and you have less than a 1/4 tank of fuel your flapper valve ont he fuel pickup may have failed causing you to suck air, like your out of fuel, but not. Very common problem for these trucks.
