My mom-in-law gave me several pounds of fresh picked peanuts the other day and I finally broke down and made my very first batch of boiled peanuts, ever.
I've tried them before when we'd get them for Steve at the road-side places and never liked them. The ones I made last night were surprisingly good. They weren't just tasteless piles of mush. They were soft but firm and had a good salt content.
I guess after 33 years in Florida, I'm beginning to turn into a southerner.
Tried them for the first time a couple years ago, someone brought them into work. Took a little getting used to them but I like them. I get them when we go to Georgia to visit the kids.

Carlene, I'm dreadfully sorry to break it to you honey, but Floridians are not Southerners. You are a world unto yourselves. Even Fark has a special tag for y'all.

Them's fightin' words!!
You are wrong, sir. I am from Florida and the Floridians I grew up with were as southern as anyone from Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia. Of course, I grew up in the panhandle, a long way away from all the Yankee transplants.
I love boiled peanuts (but have yet to find okra that I could stomach- no matter how it was cooked, I hate it!) I fished for bream and catfish when I was a kid, know how to tie a trot line... basically whatever Hank, Jr says in "A Country Boy Can Survive." I have discovered that watermelon that was grown anywhere (that I've tried) but Florida just isn't as good. And boiled peanuts are terrific, but really hard to eat while you're driving.(I can't see the picture you posted.)
Grandmother made me try them long ago and I hated them. I tried them again a few years ago to give them another chance and hated them that time too. They rank up there with boiled turnips and rhubarb.....can't stand them either.
Why anyone would take a perfectly good peanut and boil it is beyond me.
Bru, my wife is from Ohio and feels the same way. I can't even get her to try one! Your narrow minded attitude toward southern cuisine ()is disturbing! (Seriously, though, have you at least tried them?)
