Earlier i had asked about the 6637 mod, after thinking about it and some different ideas, what would happen if you did the same set up but rather than the 6637 you used a K&N air filter or another brand? Would the concept be the same? Wouldnt the air flow still be increased regardless of the filter? Just throwin around some ideas. Pleaese respond with ideaes or insight.
The reasons for the cons that people speak of are because of the open air element, not the 6637 alone. Stay away from the K&N from the issues that have been stated before. If you are going to pay the money for the element, you may as well get the whole system as it was designed. Just my .02
alright i was just curious and throwin around ideas. i am planning on building a box for it anyway so was just wondering if you could in theory use any filter.

Several guys have built boxes for the 6637, and yeah in theory you could do it with any filter. Check with Megawatt00, he has some pics of his box I think.
K&N filters are not a good thing IMO. If you want to try a different filter, I'd suggest AFE. There is the AFE version of a 6637 filter, and I also know a guy who bought a great big cone shaped AFE and did his own version of a DIY intake.
The problem with the K&N is the amount of dirt it lets through. Also it appears that the volume of air that the diesel engine pulls in pulls the oil coating off of the filter over time allowing even more dirt into the engine. I went with the AIS and like it. A very easy install and my engine gets more clean air then OEM setup.
The biggest problem with K&N is not the filter itself. It is how the filter seals in the stock air box. That is mostly a stock air box generated problem. They just don't seal worth a dang. The 6637 just happened to have a neck size that matched what we need to do what we have been doing.
That being said....K&N by it's open weave design depends almost entirely on the oil to trap the dirt. As it dries out, bad things begin to happen.
