Bigger is better, at least when it comes to filtration. I ziptied my IAT sensor to the master cylinder and the filterminder I put in a hole drilled in the end of the 6637, so it still works. Some just ziptie both out of the way, no big deal. The K&N requires maintenance, and if you are good about that, bueno. If it is left to dry and fail you'll dust the turbo and eventually have hideously expensive consequences. A clogged 6637 just restricts flow. My dos centavos.
Thanks for the input David. Off to Napa tomorrow to get or order the 6637. Thought I might save some work, and have a reusable filter with the K&N. Obviously not the way to go, or all you guys would be using the K&N.
Haven't had this truck long, and still trying to figure out everything that has or hasn't been done. Exhaust is banks 4" turbo back, but does have muffler and cat. It is an early 99 with an 8-98 build date. I love the turbo scream already, can't wait to hear this new sound. Like I said though, someone started doing work on this truck, just gotta learn exactly what was done and why. It seems the exhaust going to 4 inch wouldn't be much use without the air intake being adequate. I don't know a whole lot, but it seems at least that you need the extra air going in to make the extra flow out to be worth a crap. Please correct me if i'm wrong. I'm new and am just trying to be an information sponge
I love that turbo sound too! I put on a wicked wheel more for that reason than the very occasional surge I had. I did not notice the whine getting much louder with the 6637 or the foil delete, but most other guys do.
Maybe yours had a Banks intake to go with the exhaust, but it was removed for sale. The 6637 is really all ya need, but the AIS is high quality and there are several cold air intake systems out there. Check out the kit from Clay at RiffRaff. He has a nice cover to go over the filter, but I just used an old pair of my wife's pantyhose.
Just got around to doing it, Not much more noise, but definitely feel a change in response, and while not louder or anything, i do hear it breating a bit better

I didnt see much if any gain in my 6637, what was a noticable difference was the straight pipe.... AWESOME!! If you can get away with it where you live get rid of the cat. and muffler if you want to see some smoke once in awhile and hear your turbo working. I have a Banks exhaust, I went from the stock down pipe and a magnaflow muffler to a 4'' straight pipe and Im not looking back
Trust me, i'd love to go straight pipe. I just don't think with the sticker regs in MA that I could get one. It may also be a bit too loud for when i tow my trailer. Maybe ditch the cat, and keep the muffler up there????

The cat won't add much restriction. You could get a free flow muffler that would help a lot. You might get a little drone depending on what brand you go with. I have a walker big truck muffler with stock piping. I get a little drone but don't seem to notice it since I did the door seal mod. If you do ditch the cat make sure you hold onto it. They are not cheap to replace.
I'd like to get a little bit of roar from the exhaust, not ridiculous but..... Almost can't tell it's back there. All I hear is engine and when applicable, Turbo.
Youre always going to hear the motor over the exhaust, unless you are next to a wall. Thats just how diesels are. In my opinion, with a gas truck you want to hear the exhaust, because they sure can sound good! But with a diesel you want to hear the motor, cause they pretty much all sound good!
But you can get your exhaust louded by removing anything in its way; cats, mufflers, and add a bigger pipe

A wicked wheel will make the turbo (exhaust whistle and under the hood) louder, as well as cure surge. I went from stock to my full 4", its only a tad louder than stock. I have heard a 5" is louder tho, and I know there are different mufflers that are definately louder.

Yea I went from stock to a 4in turbo-back MBRP with the muffler and it's only a tiny bit louder, but the whislte is definitely louder. I must say, the truck sure opened up with it though, runs great pulling up hills even though I have no custom tunes, just the exhaust and an AIS.
