The seats in my '50 F2 are nothing but springs - no coverings of any kind remaining. Does anyone have or can point me to a template for basic seat covers? I was thinking of trying my hand at making some - my wife is pretty good with a sewing machine.
You might try contacting Truxx1956, he does some upholstery work on these old trucks and might have a template. If not maybe someone with a stock seat can take some measurements for you.
Its a pretty basic seat and shouldn't be too hard to sew something up. I plan on doing my own upholstery work also and am in the process of learning what to do.
Most of the reproduction parts places sell upholstery kits for our trucks, that seems like the easiest way to go. I personally would check out some local upholstery shops, they're like every one else and are looking for business. Maybe you could find a local place that would do it for almost the same price as buying the kit. You might be able to find a place that will do it for the same price as the kit.
I was talking to my neighbor yesterday, who has a '33 Ford two door about his upholstery. He said he have the door panels, back seat and headliner done at a local shop a short time ago for around $2000. The big name upholstery company that seems like everyone goes to for their old cars wants close to $5K for my '37, which has about the twice the interior as my neighbor's Ford. $5K is just for the kit, I'd have to either put it in myself or hire someone to install it for me.
I personally don't think it's worth doing myself if I can find some one willing to do it for a little more. I am not a rich guy who sends everything out to have done, quite the opposite, I tend to do everything on my trucks myself but I know when I am over my head. There's a reason why there are experts.
The other thing is that you'll undoubtedly need a few new springs, tie wires, padding, etc., that a local guy will have in stock and is included. I got my '52's seat completely redone for $325, back when things were full-price. I don't know that it has gotten any cheaper, tho.
I got to choose colors, patterns, and the seat is very comfortable.
