Question Power Steering

I have a 1950 F1, still running it's original flat eight, 6V pos ground, original steering column, steering gearbox and suspension. I am also still running 16X600 Bias plies so handling in the city is a bit rough!
I would like to add power steering and I see a lot of conversion kit for '53 and up but have not found anything for a '50. Is there anything out there ? Can I find a pump that will fit ? I would appreciaete any help you could me

The Toyota power steering box will work with your truck. Here is a link with some info.

The power steering pump is another story. The only direct bolt in for the 239 flathead would be the pump and related brackets from a '53 Ford or Merc. Passenger car. This is the first year for power assist option and the last year for the flathead. So finding this setup will be a challenge. Someone on here has made his own bracket to mount a GM pump. It can be done.

I have pictures and diagrams of 2 different style mounting brackets for the toyota box into the 48-52 trucks in one of my galleries.

Mounting the box is pretty straightforward and is basically the same as the 53 and later trucks. Most of the vendors have good technical write ups about it on their websites.

You will probably have to fabricate some mounting brackets to mount the pump on the Flathead. Whatever pump you chose keep in mind that the fittings on the steering box are metric. There are vendors (Gotta Show) that sell custom hoses for this swap but they are pretty pricey. I made my own. I scoured the foreign car section of the wrecking yard and found a pressure hose with a metric male fitting on one end and a metric female fitting on the other end. I then took the pressure hose that fit my box and cut a section of the hard steel line off, I slid a metric male fitting over the cut end and then reflared it so that I had a short section of hard steel line with a standard fitting on one end and a metric fitting on the other that would connect to the hose I got from the wrecking yard.

I'm betting that any competent hydraulic shop should be able to fabricate a hose that would work.

Good luck with it
Bobby

Very cool!

I just got back Saturday night from a 3 day ride up into the high country in Colorado. Spent a few days either chasing the rain or getting chased by it, had a great time, rode some nice roads, stayed mostly dry, and relaxed.
