My coolant overflow reservoir (is this known as the de-gas bottle?) has developed a leak at the top seam. If I fill it up past the seam it slowly leaks out. If I let it find it's own level, about a half gallon low, it does not leak. Is this a cause for concern? Diesel's are new to me, I just purchased my EX last month, any help would be appreciated.
7.3's tend to prefer to level out below the cold fill line..right at where the top of the radiator sits. I discovered this and after some frustration trying to refill the degas bottle, I learned that the natural fluid level for these trucks is lower than where the cold fill line is.

I can't say it is leaking for sure, but it seems to be slightly moist around the top seam. Maybe it is just my imagination. Is it okay to run a little low on coolant? It is about an inch below the cold level.

X2 on Smokin's info. I don't know why but they all seem to prefer a little different fill level. But the main thing to look at is does it continue to get lower or get to a point and then hold that.

I would just keep an eye on it. If you aren't finding coolant puddles under the truck, I doubt its leaking. Now, I suppose it is possible you have a crack in the degas bottle, and if that's the case you'll eventually loose more and more coolant to steam and evaporation, maybe slowly but the coolant level would continue to drop. Like Clay said if it stays at that level and doesn't keep going down, that's a good thing
Lisa and Clay - thanks much for the insight! It does not seem to drop below the level that it is finding for itself. I have only put a few thousand miles on the truck since purchase so I will definitely keep an eye on it.

Sounds to me like she just likes that level and is being stubborn. I liken my truck to a stubborn woman sometimes...most of the time its her way or the highway (or no highway as the case may be), no discussion...she's a good girl as long as I pay attention to her.
So did I, but for different reasons. My ex lived in Strasburg, but I bet you were out there for the range. Unless you live that way, there's not much other reason to be out there.

Used to frequent a range out near Deer Trail...but my reasons for visiting Byers were personal. Dated a guy who lived there.
Small world. I lived in Strasburg for about ten years until moving to the Bennett area. My nearest neighbor is a hundred or so head of cattle - I like it
Not to jump in there neighbors but I recall Roland going thru two coolant fill bottles from the same thing, the seams giving out and leaking. Like Lisa, Clay and Brendan suggest, keep an eye on it.
I found the source of the leak - I have a very small hole just above the top seam. It just barely leaks when the truck is hot and I fill it to the full level. If I leave it just below the seam/low level it does not leak. I will look for new degas bottle, in the mean time I'm going on a 3k mile road trip - is this is any cause for concern for up coming trip or should I find a new bottle ASAP?
