I don't own one of these vehicles, but I'm looking to put an Expedition rack(modified from a junker) on my F-150 Supercrew.
Can someone tell me if the crossrails are able to come off of the side rails when it's on the truck?
I know the rear 1 slides and clamps in place, but does it lock to the side rails too?
They definately come off. I just bought my truck and the PO had removed the stock cross rails and installed Thule rack feet in their place. I don't know exactly how he did it but both the cross rails and side rails are still both in perfect working condition.
so the front/s mounted permanantly, and the rear crossbar is adjustable and can be removed right off of the vehicle?
Damn, not good for what I want to use it for.
Both can be removed on the 03, guess I didn't say that very well. Or, maybe you understood what I meant and you're looking for one that has adjustable front and rear bars.
Obviously this is going to be a custom job, so here's some food for thought. The side rails have the adjustment holes, for the locking pin of the rear cross bar, starting at the very back and going all the way up to the front cross bar. I don't see why you couldn't get 2 rear cross bars, so you would have 2 adjusting and locking cross bars. Cause it sounds like that's what you're looking for.
i took them both off on my 03. picked up 20 hp and 5 mpg.........
SAWEET!! I just took mine off this weekend, I can't wait for the gains!!
Seriously though, I don't know why I never took them off before, I've used them twice in the 5 years I've had the truck. As little as it may be, 5 years worth of drag has to add up to something.

Maybe I didn't explain well either.
A fixed front crossbar is fine with me.Actually would prefer that. And after I get everything "set-up",the rear crossbar will be in a position where I don't need to move it.Moveable and lockable to the siderails would be ideal. What I'm looking to do is transport 10-12' long surf rods to the beach.I need them to be locked on top of the truck.Having crossbars that are able to be just lifted off the side rails is no good for what I'm looking to do.If the front ,fixed crossbar and the adjustable rear crossbar were lockable to the side rail,I'd be in business.
Hmmm. So by "lockable", do you mean locked with a key? If so, then these are not "lockable". The front bar is attached with a thread thumb screw and the rear bar slides onto the tracks from the rear and then has a latch to hold it into position. They are fairly easy to remove, say under 5 minutes. But they are solidly mounted and rated to carry 200 lbs.
