I know this sound crazy but my truck(1997 Ford F-150 4.2 V6 with 4R70W transmission) appears to have 5 forward speeds, I have monitored the shift points numerous times and the trucks starts out in first gear and has 4 additional shift points for a total of 5 forward speeds, I know this sounds crazy but I have checked and double checked and it does happen, Starting with selector in drive the truck starts out in 1st gear and I count 4 additional shift points, each shift point results in a drop of engine RPM/increase in vehicle speed monitored via tachometer/speedometer plus sound/feel as I am driving.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this..Should I be worrying about an internal problem with the trans..All the shifts are smooth and firm and are definate shift points.
Hi ProjectSHO89
Thanks for responding..Sorry I should have clarified..yes I realize the last is converter lockup but I thought that the transmission was a 3 speed with overdrive for a total of 4 forward speeds, the 4th being converter lockup/overdrive. My truck has 4 forward speeds plus converter lockup/overdrive equals a total of 5 forward speeds.
Good morning Val,
I understand your concern, but to my knowledge its basically a 3 speed, with Overdrive. The Overdrive being that t/c lockin point previously stated.
If the tranny is high mileage,Id be concerned,as I suspect its shifting into/and out of one of the first three gears, and thats what your feeling.
It could also be the t/c locking/unlocking,and then repeating it again giving you the impression of 5 gears.
Unless you have some sort of "prototype" that wasnt supposed to go into a production truck...there is an issue....
Whatever you do don't let anyone do a flush on these transmissions. Use the dealership or someone you really trust to drop the pan. If the rubber plug is still inside the pan, its never been dropped. If you don't know when it was done, I'd do it soon. You must use the Mercron fluid indicated on the dip stick, and Nothing else!!
no, it is a 4 speed auto. the 4th gear is an overdrive. AFTER you are in high gear, the torque converter will lock up and stop slipping. the feeling is that you have shifted gears, but actually you are going from a automatic type transmission to a manual transmiison simulation. Your taking the torque conver out of the setup. Lockup and overdrive are not the same thing.
