I have a 99 Expedition with the 5.4L in it. It has around 150K on it and the tranny has never been serviced. I looked at the fluid level and the level looks good but the fluid is kind of dull.
Recently on a trip, the transmission has started shifting hard into passing gear, when I accelerate quickly or get on it kind of hard (when entering a highway from an on ramp). There is a noticeable 'clunk' when it shifts (felt and heard), but it does shift. Once I get up to speed, I have no other issues. I did take it out onto a beach in 4WD and when it got into deeper sand and under a heavier load, it sounded really bad. The clunking was almost constant, loud and noticeable to other drivers on the beach. Could this be a U-Joint issue or something worse? I know I have not been diligent in maintenance, but if I don't need a new tranny, should I get the tranny serviced or just let it go at this point and monitor the level?
Thanks.
More than likely it is a 'U'ee, but if you've never had your tranny serviced that is not good. These tranny's need attention and fluid change is #1. Have it serviced, NOT BY AMMCO, and while the guy is under there have him check your 'U'ee's.
same problem. When towing and accelerating up a hill I get this clunking noise vibration thing. I got it looked at transmission place. They said torque converter problem (torque converter shutter). They said to live with it until it really goes or try some Dr Tranny, which I did and problem went away for about 5,000 miles. Problem is back again but not as bad. Will try some more.
Here's the stuff .....Can get in most automotive parts stores. http://www.midwayautosupply.com/p-12...-oz-19610.aspx
Ok, if this is true and the torque converter is the problem, I would recommend replacing it before you have to rebuild the whole tranny if it goes. I am not saying you have to, but to replace a torque converter runs around $900 with labor. To rebuild a tranny will run $1800 plus, you can do the math.
When a torque converter dies, it pukes into the tranny with all these neat little filings that force you to rebuild it. I speak from experience, but the only warning I got was a high rev between 1st and 2nd. I took it to my tranny dude and we dropped the pan and found a porcupine on my magnetic pickup in the pan. He said the tranny was in great condition except for those pieces and it had to be rebuilt. Just a word of advice is all gentlemen, you decide its fate.
Thanks High Horse. I did toss that around. My tranny has 150,000 mi on it. I know someday that it will have to be rebuilt. I hoping to make it to 175,000 before things go to crap.
