that's what i was guessing i'd end up having to do cuz if you looking closely at the coupling, those aren't bolts holding it in. and i broke the tip of my knife trying to pry them off.
did you see the pic in the link? that's a rag joint, yes? the dorman part i found was listed as a coupler disc replacement kit. but if you wanna call it mickey mouse, be my guest . listen. originally this truck was 2wd so somebody did a lot of bad mods on this poor machine. i'm just trying to get her ship-shape again... why is there a difference anyway? i mean, don't they do the same thing?
It's mickey-mouse because there was no rag joint there as original.
1966 F100 4WD's, 1967/76 F100/250 4WD's, 1977 F250 4WD's (1977 High Boys) used steering shaft and coupler assemblies, all of which were over a foot long.
The coupler used from 1967 thru 1975 (D5TZ3B676A) was composed of 18 separate parts including a replaceable u-joint and bearings.
The steering shaft and couplers used 1976/77 were one piece assemblies that used a replaceable rag joint.
Yes, I realize your truck was converted to 4WD. But as original, no 1966/75 F100/250 4WD came with a rag joint...none.
A previous owner made something up that would work....prolly because they could not find the correct steering shaft and coupler assy that has been OBSOLETE for over 20 years.
The Dorman kit cross references to this Ford part number: C9UZ3A525A .. Steering Coupler (slang term: rag joint). This is not a steering shaft and coupler assembly.
C9UZ3A525A fits: 1969/74 F100/350 TWO WHEEL DRIVE / 1975 F100/350 TWO WHEEL DRIVE with manual steering / 1969/74 Econoline.
I've typed this info here on FTE countless times. I've even found a couple of the NOS obsolete 1967/75 steering shaft and coupler assy's for members.
And several of the replaceable obsolete u-joints (C6TZ3815B) as well.
C9UZ3A525A is still available from Ford.
After looking up this scheiss for over 35 years as a Ford partsman, I know what the hell I'm speaking of.
i ain't doubting you boss. i was just elaborating on how clusterf**ked this truck is... you know so much about this. please tell me where or how i'm supposed to find this steering shaft and coupler.
This is an aftermarket replacement, it looks nothing like the original.
Since I don't know what the rest of the steering column parts look like on your truck, since it's been modified, I cannot say whether this will work or not.
What you need to see is the parts catalog illustration of the whole tamale.
FTE member jermafenser has the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog on a CD, can scan and post illustrations.
Illustration Section 35, Page 4 of this catalog shows the same illustration of the steering column and shaft & coupler assembly that is shown for 1967/72 F100 4WD's in the 1964/72 truck catalog.
I'll ask him to post this illustration so you can see what was originally used.
Since I'm using these catalogs on microfiche, I cannot scan and post pics.
I just P/M'd jermafenser who is online now...hopefully he will have a chance to post the FORD truck parts catalog pic.
This is the same catalog the dealers use.
I have no LMC catalogs for anything, so I have no clue what they show.
well basically LMCtruck.com is a website that provides parts through catalogs with a basically every piece of a truck... everything from body panels and trim, to electrical components, to engine and trans components... suspension... steering... front end... rear end... everything down to the last bushing. i just looked at mine and it shows a couple different steering shafts, but which one to use, because they have one that's basically like the one i posted, another for 2wd, and another for 4wd. and they all have different various components...
LMC Truck is an aftermarket supplier, nothing else. What they show aren't always correct.
This is the illustration for the correct steering system for '67-'72 4x4s. I strongly suggest checking everything. Do you really want to know what's it like to lose the ability to steer your old behemoth? Do you?
lol no sir. but my f100's 2nd generation (i think). isn't this diagram for a 3rd generation?
Not a second generation. If we are to divide by "generations", the 1967/72 trucks would be the fifth since the F-series debuted in 1948.
Evidently you didn't read NumberDummy's post:

Thus this illustration does apply to your vehicle. Get it kid?
yeah i get it. i'm just wondering why the diagram says 73-75 is all. is calling me kid really necessary? i'm just trying to learn here. if my questions bother you you don't have to post. i'll understand. i believe i pm'd you...
