is it bolted in correctly?

if it is loose this would be a problem.

I take it you are saying it will not crank when hot with a new starter and starter solenoid but the starter is turning.

This would mean that you need a new ring gear.

If it was a rebuilt starter take it back and have em swap it for another. I delt with the same problem and the swap hooked me up. Havent had a problem since.

Good call. Nick (nighthawk285) had this problem after a ZF swap when he got a reman starter and was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with his truck. Turned out the reman starter was a dud, they got him hooked up with a new one. This is not an uncommon thing.

I had the same problem with my '78 F150 with a 351. Replaced multiple starters, all the same deal. Would not start when hot.

I believe the thermostat was bad and when the engine was overheating (even though the dash gauge did not say it was in the red zone) the excess heat was causing either mechanical or electrical resistance in the starter to increase past what the 12v in the battery could overcome to spin the starter.

Whatever the reason was, replacing the thermostat with a known good one fixed the problem like flicking a light switch. the temp gauge showed a very noticeable reduction in coolant temp (needle swung about 1/3 of the way to the right instead of 2/3 of the way to the red zone on the gauge).

i had the same problem in my 89i f-150 4x4 with a 300ci. i went through about 4 starters.......all had lifetime garentees too. i got so fed up with it i ended up replacing everything, battery, alternator, solenoid, starter, wires....... then realized that there is no heat shield from the factory that seperates the starter from the exhaust which is right next to it... i then just rebuilt the motor wanted a new project. but your problem is probably an overheating issue of sorts. take a temp reading of the engine using a multimeter or other thermometer other then your dash gauge and see how hot it is running at when it is warmed up. if it is above the normal operating temperature start tracing the the source whether it is a thermostat, water pump or radiator. or if your really handy with a welder then fabricate your own heat shield.
