I just had the lower ball joint replaced on my 2003 f150 and noticed that they tore a hole in the cv boot on the axle shaft at the tire end.
I will be bringing it back to the repair shop tomorrow.
Can the cv boot just be replaced or do I need a new axle?
many applications have split boots you can install without opening up the axle assembly. You have to check to see if one is available for your application. Did you examine your boots before you had the ball joints installed? Is this how you know they split the boot?
The boot was not split before I took it in for the ball joint.
I know this for sure because I was looking at the ball joint and studying it to see if I would be able to replace it.
It looked like it would give me some trouble so I brought it in.
The shop tore the boot for sure probably when trying to remove the ball joint.
They also hacked up the metal clamp that holds the boot on plus there was no grease all over the place until I got it back.
Sounds like you would have been better off doing the job yourself considering the results you got. Lower ball joints are not that bad. On some Fords the ball joint press won't fit to press out the old ball joint because of the curved shape of the lower control arm, but those can be beat out with a 3lb. maul once the big circlip is removed. You must support the underside of the control arm on both sides while you hit the old ball joint with a maul. They are splined so they come out pretty eash. Not all that bad and surprisingly the press fits when pushing the new ball joint.
