Lost all oil in 20 miles, help!
Hey guys
So I'm driving my 03 F-350 home from a day of deliveries with my 5th wheel behind.. after awhile I notice a haze.. exhaust is burning clean so I didn't think it was me. After awhile I stop to look.. the entire undercarriage is COATED with oil.
There is : -oil pooled on the intake
-oil filter is dry, but everything else under the truck is coated
So it lost alot of oil fast, something where there is oil pressure is leaking. Any ideas? I'm searching the forums like mad and coming up with nothing. I can't move the truck to get it washed since it's out of oil. So hard to track the leak. (I looked when I had it running and couldn't find it).
Any ideas? This is my bread and butter, and I can't get it into the dealer till tuseday.

Yea, give me a few minutes to find the pictures. Keep your chin up, it's probably a $2 o-ring.
Here's what I've found so far.
This is your HPOP
It's hard to see in this picture, but the HPOP kind of sits underneath the fuel filter bowl. The 2 outlet fittings point toward the drivers side. That's 1 location for the o-rings. You can also check the end plug for a leak, but that much oil that quick usually isn't the plug.
Here's the general picture
It's got arrows showing the HPO lines. They run from the outlet fittings to a fitting near the middle inboard side of each head. It's a braided line covered with plastic wire loom. Check where the lines go into the head for the other o-ring locations.
The lines have quick disconnect ends on them so you'll need to make or find a tool to help get them apart
Edit again, One last thing, if that's the problem, the o-rings you need are -906 viton 90 o-rings.

I don't have much to offer in the way of help, but take solice int he fact that you didn't do any damage, since these trucks won't run that low on oil. I found that out first hand a few years ago. I, too, had a HPOP leaking, and had been maintaing the oil level. However, I was so busy, that I failed to keep an eye on it for a few days, and it got real low. I left the house one morning, and didn't make it 1/2 a mile before it started acting really crazy. sputtering and kinda knocking almost. I pulled over, pulled the dipstick, and it didn't even read on the dipstick. I think i soiled myself a little at that moment (I wasn't schooled much on the 7.3, not that I'm an expert now by no means) thinking I'd ruined my truck.
I did have almost two gallons of oil in the bed, which i proceeded to pour into my truck while saying a little prayer, and still was in the "add" range. got it home, and took the F450 to town to get a couple more qts. after topping it up, all was good, and I had ford repair since it was still under warranty.
THANKFULLY I didn't FUBAR anything.
This isn't really helpful, but I felt like sharing LOL

Wow
I can't thank you guys enough for your help! I would be at the mercy of the dealer since I wouldn't have time to figure all that out. Now I can jump straight into the repair and not waste any time.
So are the o-rings visible right after I release the lines? Or do I have to remove the outlet fittings to replace the o-rings?
I'm actually from Canada, 10 miles north of North Dakota. I'd be surprised if any FTE guys were from around here... But half the population here drives diesel trucks, so you never know!

Geoff if you grab the HPOP lines and wiggle them, you will see that there is a fitting that is bolted directly to the head on one end and the HPOP on the other. The union that joins the flex line to that fitting is where the O-ring resides, up inside the fitting a bit.
You have to dig the old one out and install the new one.
