i just bought a 84 f250 2wd for the 7.5 460 it has in it. i am going to put it in my 79 f250 4x4 it now has a mid 70s 460 in it. what kinds of differences are there in these two motors?
Not a whole lot. 1979 they went to externally ballanced motors so if the motor in your 79 is a 78 or older its internally ballanced and your flex plate or flywheel wont work on the newer externally ballanced motor.

This occured MIDYEAR 1979, not at the beginning of the model year.
This was a running change, so...there is no serial number or production date break.
The following info comes directly from the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog:
Block casting numbers used in 1979 460 F100/350's and Econolines:
D1VE-6015-AB, AB1, AB2: 1971/73 429 & 1971/79 460 do not use a weighted spacer.
D9TE-6015-AB introduced midyear 1979, uses a weighted spacer. The harmonic balancer and flywheel (flexplate) are not the same as used with the DIVE blocks.
No 460 engines were installed in 1979 passenger cars. 1978 was the last year.
1983 was the first year that Ford offered a manual transmission with the 460.
