I was looking to buy a 93 f 250 4x4 that has a 460 in it its automatic.how many mpg will this thing get i know it wont be good but i was told it will only get 8 mpg is this true?or will it do a little better than that?
My 86 gets about 10 empty with 3:55 gears, about 8.5 towing a 10,000 lb 5th wheel. The worst I ever got was towing the trailer into a 35-40mph head wind, I got Chevy 454 mileage, around 6.5.
My 92 gets 7-8 around town, but I drive almost all short (3-5 miles) trips. 11 on the road at 65-70mph. 460-E4OD-4.11-4x4-crewcab-32" tires, so basically I'm close to worst case.
All time best with 3.54 gears: ~12.5 @~6,000' in CO I think someone was tampering with my tanks!
All time worst with 4.10's, 10K trailer, going south, winds steady from the south at 38mph with gusts to 51 mph: ~5.2 mpg
Helluva way to start a vacation, eh?
You don't own or run a 460 for mileage ..... you work it and take your licks!
93 f250hd with e40d, 3.55 gears, 460. Stock 235 85 16 tires. 8600 GVWR. Abut 170000 miles, and Mobil 1 from day one. Recently switched to Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w 30.
Before tuneup and with stock exhaust empty around town was 8 mpg, could possibly pull 12 down the highway with a tailwind. I didn't feel like checking it towing-it would make me cry. This is light footed driving and warm weather, moderately hilly terrain. When I used to drive this truck in the winter, you could reduce these figures by at least 1-2 mpg. The old girl gets parked in the winter now.
Tuneup, gutted the cat (no emission testing here), single 3" glasspack, and single 3" tail pipe (not mandrel bent -necks down quite a bit in the bends) equated to 12.5 around town and 14 mpg down the highway, if you kept it under 60. Haven't checked it towing yet. I really can't tell what made the most improvement because I did all this at once.
My "**** dyno" really shows a difference in acceleration and hill climbing power. Would have been really interesting to do a real dyno test before and after.
