Hey fellas, I need a question answered. Why wont the muffler shops run a true dual system on my 1985 f-150 with a 351W? Is it a emission problem? I have seen it done but when I try to get it done no one will do it. How can I get it done?
Does it have a catalytic converter. If so that's probably why, a shop cannot remove a Cat. Now if you go in there with open headers, they'd probably throw on some duals for ya.
one muffler shop refused me saying i may have replaced the radiator support with one from a non-catalytic truck..
but no the rad support and non-catalytic sticker are factory on my truck..
tell them to contact ford, they will tell them there was no cats on that truck.all i did on my 86 was cut off the old muffler leaving two exhaust pipes, added two mufflers and two turn downs.true dual exhaust.i had to mount my mufflers sideways to fit them side buy side.you can see them just behind the running boards on the truck.these are turbo mufflers and are quiet at idle but roar when you stomp on it.
yes i know the mufflers are low,i broke the muffler hanger and have to fix it this week end.
More than likely the muffler shops are just lazy. I have a '80 F-100, and though the truck does not have duals the shop I took it to had no hesitations with taking the cat off entirely. I live in Texas so many counties could care less about emissions here.
Hahahaha this is true! I did some research on the Texas gubmint website a few years ago and from what I can remember any vehicle over 25 years old is checked only to make sure the exhaust system is not leaking, but I can't remember if that would also apply to smog "probe" counties. I would think a cat on each pipe with a crossover would work just fine as long as you stayed under the "pollutant" number requirements. I myself hate cats and think they are just a restrictive waste, but that's a whole nother soap box!
Chances are they are lazy or you are trying to get a setup that would not be legal for them to install. Your truck requires a converter and if you are wanting them to install true duals with no converters they would be in hot water if they were caught. I think the fine is $10,000 if they let you leave without a converter.
F-250's with a GVW of 8500lbs or more were converter exempt, if the shop people aren't smart enough to realize that then I would go someplace else.

What state do you live in? As far as proving to the shop that your truck came w the rad support that is in it. There is a date on the sticker. and your door jam sticker states the GVW. Most F350 were exempt due to the heavy GVW. I would go to a differnt shop anyway. And why do you want true duals anyway? It the engine "worked"? If not you are wasting your money
