true dual vs. crossover?

so i decided to get the exhaust done on my 02 f150 5.4L 4x4. the exhaust shop im having it done at is running dual exhaust with 2 40 series flowmasters. now being the idiot i am i forgot to ask if it was true dual, now is it a problem if its a true dual against if he does put a crossover in? which is best?

What do you mean by "crossover"? Normally, a crossover pipe (or "H" pipe or balance tube), when used, is used in conjunction with true duals.

True duals don't need an "H" pipe, but most people here will recommend it as long as you're having duals installed. I have it on my truck...I think it's worth it. Very little expense.

I see what your saying, it doesnt affect how the truck runs or anything does it or is it just the sound difference, bc the H pipe balances the back pressure and without it does it make it run any different?

I'm not an exhaust guru by any means, but most here I believe will tell you that it does affect the tone and probably enhances peformance a tad. In fact, The "H" pipe is the less expensive cousin to the "x" pipe. If the shop is fabbing up the whole thing, you might ask them about h vs. x. I'm almost afraid to bring up the idea of headers.

I don't have a crossover pipe (H- pipe or X-pipe) on my 74' with true duals. Having a an h or x pipe will help balance out the system and help the sound some and possible create a little extra power. A crossover pipe doesn't affect backpressure any, just helps even out the pulses generated by the engine. Helps scavenging as well.

You won't hurt anything by not having one.

IMO opinion having true duals isn't really an advantage compared to splitting the pipes at the muffler. You will probably get better low end with a single in dual out muffler and splitting to duals after the muffler.

I got headers, high flow dynatech cat, exhaust, intake and tuner on my 04' 6.8l SD and it makes a good bit difference over stock. My 74' has headers too. Got to have the headers. Once you start modding its hard to stop.

Get through school, get a good job and pour money into the trucks.

Yeah thats not true duals. That setup should work ok though.

If it would have been me I would have went with a single in/dual out muffler. That way you only have to buy one muffler and it would save you about $80.

Heres a pic of what I'm trying to describe.

yeh i understand what ur saying with the dual after the muffler. umm looking for some clarification...so would true dual be from each header a straight pipe coming off each header with a muffler, sensors, converters, and all that where the pipes never cross?

The trucks are less of a headache though.

Headers or Exhaust manifolds back are true duals like flareside said.

Its so much easier and cheaper dealing with the old school headers and duals like on my 74' F-100. Headers, no cats, no sensors, no egr, don't even need mufflers, just straight through. Cheap and easy, sounds good every time. The newer stuff is more of a challenge.
