I purchased an Edelbrock 3881 Performer Intake manifold and plenum kit from Summit along with a BBK throttle body to the tune of $850.
I planned on putting it on my '96 F-150 5.8 351w.
However... We were robbed and the upper intake and throttle body were stolen. Now I am stuck with a Edelbrock 3881 lower and no matching upper or throttle body.
The Performer Intake came in a "kit" with upper, lower, gaskets, bolts, etc. I already have the lower installed with the injectors in it. I do not have the $850 to replace the upper with another Edelbrock performer and BBK throttle body.
so:
Is there another upper that will fit the Edelbrock lower and won't cost me $600?
If not, What manifolds can I use to replace the Edelbrock that have better flow?
Is the Edelbrock lower worthless without the Edelbrock upper?
is this the truck intake? if so go on ebay and look for the typhoon upper intakes. it might require some port matching but should work and are cheaper.
Yes get a Typhoon upper... it a car style Performer copy. I got a complete Typhoon for my 5.8 for under $350. And the machine work on my copy isn't bad at all, I have not touched these ports that is as delivered. The exterior finish however wasn't exactly show quality(this is why it's so cheap) so I did some cleanup and had it powdercoated crinkle black.
So is the Typhoon 5.0 upper the same as the 5.8 upper? The website says the 5.8 requires upper with a part number of 54125 but all I can find is uppers with the 5.0 number which is 54025...
The site may be a little confusing but there is only 1 upper just like Edelbrock.
54020/021 is the complete 5.0 intake system.. upper and lower.
54124/125 is the upper only.
54122/123 is the 5.0 lower only
54126/127 is the 5.8 lower only.
So I ordered the Typhoon manifold, both the upper and lower but still under $400! I will just re-sell the lower and keep the Edelbrock if it fits. So now I need to find a throttle body and MAF that is calibrated for 24lb injectors. Will I need the Mustang or 5.0 intake hoses since the intake is now a big single instead of the original double and come out the side instead of the front. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Okay, changing out my 1994 5.0 roller for a 5.8 with gt40P heads in 1986 F250 with speed density efi. I knoiw the computer will run it because the 5.0 is an ho with the same firing order as a 5.8 (got to love batch firing). Anyway, what do I need for an intake (lighting 5.8)?II don't think a conventional 5.8 will line up because of the GT40P heads (correct?). Are there any well performing but affordable aftermarket systems out there that I can put my factory upper and tubes on?
I guess the GT40P hdads came stock on the 5.0 post 1997 explorers and mountaineers but only in 5.0?
If so, what efi manifold in 5.8 ford will work with them>
I'm pretty sure there is an alIgnment issues with the intake ports on the gt40p HEADS MAKING ONLY A LIGHTNING TYPE INTAKE WORK PROPERLY.
There are no alignment issues with the std 351W intakes and the GT40 heads. I did a GT40 head swap on my 96 E150's roller 351W last year. 12,000+ miles later with trips to Kalifornia, Colorado, Texas and Arkansas and zero problems using the stock 351W EFI intakes (upper and lower) You do NOT need a Lightning intake to make this swap happen.
what you will have fun with is the exhaust manifolds. finding shorty headers that will fit correctly due to the spark plug angle is a nightmare and expensive.
Yea, the GT40P's have the weird spark plug angle that complicates fitting headers to them. The exhaust valve is also the same as the E7 heads, but according to Ford they flow better on that side. I went with the regular GT40 heads in my van. I removed the Thermactor bumps from the roof of the ports to improve the flow. That operation takes an hour to do with a good porting bit.
