Early 99 Engine Swap

My brother has an early 99 truck and the engine is making some bad noises. We are starting to look for a used engine. Will a late 7.3 engine run with early 99 electronics or do I have swap out the computer and IDM for a later model? Are there any differences I should be aware of that will add extra money to installing a later 7.3 in the truck?

Oh, the truck is a manual trans too. Not sure if that makes the answers different.

Thanks!

i think that all you need to swap is the motor and electronics.

unless you put all the early 99 components on the new motor, like the injectors, turbo. stuff like that.

Just swap the motor... the electric stuff the late has that the early doesn't (AIH is about it) is a non-issue.

Long blocks are the same for 94-03. I'm putting a re-manned longblock in right now on an early 99. Keep all the external stuff the same and the computer won't care. Turbo, hpop, sensors, etc.

The engine will physically swap in.

Here are some things to think about:

Electronics are a non-issue. Yes, the later engine has an air intake heater on the intake "spider" but unless you plan on swapping the exhaust manifolds, up-pipes, turbocharger, and turbo pedestal to "upgrade" the e99 to a 99.5-up spec. turbo setup, you'll be running the smaller e99 "spider" anyway.

The later engine will have higher-capacity (for lack of a better term) injectors and a higher-capacity high pressure oil pump (HPOP) to run the larger injectors. The programming in the PCM of the e99 truck will not care whether or not there are larger injectors in the engine.....it will run as though it still has the 120cc AB-codes in it. No problem. The larger HPOP from the later engine will have an easier time running the ABs under high load anyway.

If the donor engine is an automatic, don't forget to remove the flexplate (auto flywheel) spacer from the rear of the crank before you try to bolt the manual flywheel on. Don't fret over the length difference of the alignment dowels in the block either; they'll go right through the bellhousing.

Lastly, you WILL have to do one of two things to get the engine back in to the e99 manual truck: Either remove the transmission first and put it in after the engine is back in the truck or remove the front 4 cab bolts (core support and the ones under the front floorboard) and jack up the cab about 5 inches. Otherwise the engine will not go back far enough before the transmission input shaft plays havoc and won't allow the engine oil pan to clear the crossmember.

Been there, done that.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. I get all kinds of answers from the junk yard guys on what will fit/work and won't. Don't really trust any of them.

What does a long block cost? Where is the best place to get one?

noisy engine

You may have a problem with your motor I don't know. But my early 99 was so loud people would look at me on every corner. It sounded like the valves were going to blow right out of the truck. Well it turned out to be my torque converter. There is a tsb on faulty converters on early 1999. Now my truck is just as quite as any other diesel.
Sorry I didn't notice the manual trans part.

Got another question, I found a 97 powerstroke with a 10/96 build date, with 67,000 miles on it. Is this a drop in kinda deal or swap over a bunch of parts? I don't know how the old body style compares with 99 superduty. Sorry for all the questions but looking at my options. This one is local and I'm going to look at tomorrow morning. It is still in the truck and runs.

Thanks again.
