I connected my AE to all sorts of vehicles in the last 8 months i had it. Been working good. But my moms Grand Am has a check engine light and when i went to plug in it can't connect.. I tried all the communication settings. I checked pins at the vehicles OBDII connector and there is 12v present so there isn't a fuse blown..I tried all three of my laptops. I am confused. I have had it hooked up to Chebby before just not to hers. it is a 98 pontiac grand Scam.
Anthing else i can try or advise on how to proceed to get my AE working on her car?
I have a 2003 Grand AM, and my AE is just the Ford Bundle, but it does connect and read codes. All I did was connect mine as OBD-II and Auto Detect. Not sure if there's a difference between the 2003 and the 1998 models.
From what i understand we get the Generic Code reader for all sorts of make and models. We paid the extra to get the Enhanced Ford. I have read other Chebbies with no problems but this car has me stumped. Mine was on OBDII, auto detect as well. But i flipped around to different settings to try. I jumped over to my Jeep and it read just fine to make sure somthing wasn't wrong with my wire.
98 should be an OBD-II year. As Curtis said, set it for "Auto-Detect" and "OBD-II Compliant". Make sure that "FastMode" is NOT enabled as I don't believe that the GM PCMs that far back would support that. After setting the comm settings, close and reopen AE and try again.
Are you getting the vehicle selection screen at all or is it just cycling on the initial connect screen with "unable to connect" messages?
I believe that 96 was the first year that ODBII was a requirement, but the early years had different "levels" of ODBII compliance. Even our 7.3 engines are just barely ODBII compliant, that's why we need enhanced Ford programming to properly read all the pids on our trucks. I think you can get RPM and speed without Ford Specific configs, that's it. I wouldn't be surprised if other manufacturers did the same.

The fast mode was not enabled. But i tried it enabled also. I have never changed "auto-detect" OBD II Compliant" from car to car. But i tried the other settings as well. I just get unable to connect check to make sure the key is on and wire is plugged in. It recognizes the adapter. So i just get the can't connect screen. No vehicle selection. If i walk over to my Jeep and plug it in. it reads instantly. So i doubt it is my pc/adapter/software. Wierd.
Have to check the volt meter thing again. As per Robin pictures. (thanks a bunch)
This car has be baffled.. As Always, Thanks for you inputs. I knew i can count on your idea's/knowledge.
