Okay, I am considering an AOD swap because PYP is having 1/2 off day coming up. I am curious, this would go into an F-250 4wd with a 351. I have heard a lot of stuff about this trans, but do not plan to tow with this. I know I would need the trans, TC, flexplate, and TV linkage, is there anything else I would need? Could someone provide me with a measurement of the bellhousing face to the face where the transfer case bolts up? I am just looking right now, but if it gets too expensive to do the swap, then forget about it. The truck currently has 3.55 gears in it, so should I even bother? I am at about 2500 cruising at 60 mph, is this generally the sweet spot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! (If this does not work, I might just get a Cummins or 7.3 I found there and do a Diesel swap) I probably will not end up with either, but I can dream - although the AOD swap might be closer to happening if I can keep minimal budget.
If you are replacing a manual trans you will also need a radiator that has trans cooler line attachment points or an external trans cooler (a good idea if you do any towing anyway).
I have heard a stock AOD tranny may not hold up to a 351's torque. I was thinking about putting one on my 300 I6 but was told the same, the torque would twist up the OD input shaft.
There is a member here that goes by the name of Conanski that is usually found in the 1987 - 1996 forums. Look him up. He has been running an AOD behind his built 351 for about 6 - 8 years now. Ask him about it.
