how do i put alternator pulley on new alternator

hey.
i am working on a friends 1998 v6 4.2 4x4 single cab f-150 5 speed truck.

need to replace alternator.

got a new alternator for it at napa. the new one does not have the pulley.

how do pull the old pulley off and install it on the new alternator?

air wrench? i dont have an air wrench. if so, how do i torque the nut?

what is the torque setting for the nut? do i need locktight? which type of locktight?

do i even need to torque the nut?

any other method besides an air wrench that is proper for a shadetree mechanic?

do i need a puller to remove the old pulley? rent one from auto zone?

sorry for so many questions, the truck is in the country far away from any town.

i work on heavy equipment of my own sometimes....not always sure about light duty stuff.

thanks.
and as a side question...who makes performance parts for the 4.2 engine?

Take it back to the NAPA store where you bought it and ask them to swap it over for you. I've worked a 2 NAPA stores and both had an electric 1/2 drive impact and did this at no charge to the customer.
Besides you can get your core credit while you're there.

most alternators use a pulley with a 18 mm shaft. most dont have a key way anymore. you just slide the pulley onto the shaft and use impact to tighten the nut. it is difficult to get off without an impact and not much way to hold the pulley.
