Hello all, I have read some to many post about the 3g upgrade. I already have the alt from a 97 Taurus with the harness, the crank double pulley, the power distribution block from same Taurus with 175 mega fuse, new belts,.
I have found 4 alts with the 2 Grove pulleys. Here's my question, " How do I remove the nut from the alternator AT THE JY when the belts have already been cut/removed by others and only have hand tools, no power impacts?" The jy will not use their impact to remove the pulley nut.
1 pulley I bent the fins pretty bad so I will practice on it first so I do not rein another pulley.
Please help and thank you in advance. Chris
Don't remove the pulley at the jy.. just remove it when ya get it home.
No impact wrench at home? ... gotta get creative by crafting or Macgyvering a "strap wrench" to hold the pulley like using piece of leather around the pulley and maybe a hammer handle. The put a.correctly sized socket to remove the nut.
Take it to your local parts store that tests Alts. Tell them you need the pulley off to put on your new Alt. When they ask wheres the other Alt, tell them its on the car bolted up and you can tighten the nut properly once the belt is installed. Most don't ask questions and just grab the impact and it's off in 3 seconds and you are on your way home....
or if there is a Harbor Freight near by, spend $80 on their 18V 1/2in Impact.....you'll use it more than your think in the future.
Thanks folks. My local jy want $35 for an alternator. $35 for the 3g that I bought and if I bring up the 2groove alt, just for the pulleys, it will be another $35. That's why I'm trying to remove it at the jy. You guys have helped a lot with this site. A fabulous reference location.
