locker ??

Im looking at rebuilding or having the rear in my 89 rebuilt. Just wonder how many people are running lockers, and how they like them, thanks in advance.

I rebuilt my rear axle and installed a ford racing high strength limited slip. Its not quite strong enough but it is way better than an open diff. I wouldnt use a full on spool for everyday driving but lockers are the way to go. Tons of relieable traction. Just figure out if you want selectable locker or a good limited slip. For a limited slip I would go with either a powertrac or eaton locker/limited slip.

I love my Eaton E-locker. Selectable, electronic, reliable, rebuildable. Selectable lockers are a bit more pricey than your typical limited-slip models but far more predictable especially when the weather gets rough. While I am used to how an LS will just sort of kick in, I wanted to KNOW exactly when and where the locking mechanism engaged. The only way to be certain is to go with a quality selectable unit. Research these units carefully. There are pros and cons to each type particularly in how they are engaged.

also really check out the limited slip/lockers out too. if my memory serves me right power trac and eaton do offer a limited slip that is locked under normal vehicle operation. it has been quite awhile so do your research. look in summitracing.com they have good descriptions usually.

Detroit makes a version that operates as an LS most of the time and can be fully engaged electronically. They had some issues with the shift mechanism in the beginning but I think they have resolved that issue. These units are OEM equipment in the Jeep Rubicons both front and rear axles.

Full-Time Locker

Just remember that if you get a full-time locker, you may be irritated with your pavement experience. I'm only 3 months into driving my Detroit Locker and, while it's AWESOME off-road, it is "freaky" on pavement. Just letting your foot off the gas on the highway can be scary, as the unit catches one side faster than the other. It also has so much play in it that it clunks louder when I put it in gear than it did with the factory LS carrier.

My Bronco is primarily a weekend/camping/trail vehicle, so it's not that big a deal, but it would get old really fast as a daily driver.

I agree completely. This was my primary reason for spending the extra $$$ on a selectable locker. I'm not always the only driver of my truck and I didn't want to be freaking out my sister or the wife when they drive it.

I know it's not a locker but after reading what you guys are saying, and looking at prices I think I might go with this.

So you are looking at an LS (Limited Slip) differential option which is certainly a step in the right direction for better traction.

I would not consider anything but a locker. I've had both and will never go back to L/S. It can be selectable or a soft locker for the street. My soft locker (powertrax) is fine on the street and I dont worry about wires, cables or air lines being torn off on the trail. Although, thats probubly not much of a problem if thier routed right. Traction is fantastic. MY front lock right is neerly a spool and not very street friendly.

I keep gping back and forth, I will probbley end going with limited slip, it will be a step up from the open diff. I did find a place to rebuild the rear and change the gears up front for dirt cheap.

My problem with L/S is the clutches ware out quick. Then it becomes open. I must admit that I have always run big tires (35" or 38") so your experince may be differnt. It makes you mad when you have money in a L/S and your stuck and someone says "your one tire is not turning"
