What kind of locker are you looking at? A selective locker like an ARB, an Electrac, or an Ox-locker acts like an open diff until the locker is engaged. Any other locker--be it a Lock-Right, a Detroit, or whatever--is always locked, unless you are coasting around a corner in which case some units may unlock to alleviate the stress on having both tires turning at the same speed. Other than that, a locker is always locked....
Hope this helps and does not confuse you more...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-02 AT 11:21 PM (EST)]Detroit is introducing the Eletrac electronic locker that works as an LS until the electronic "locker" is switched on. Unlike Eaton's E-locker which leaves the diff "open" until switched on eletronically. ARB's Air locker works much the same way. The diff remains "open" until the compressed air supply activates the locking mechanism.
Hope this helps answer the question. Other lockers that activate automatically via ratcheting mechanisms etc. would (as was previously posted) be installed in place of an existing LS setup.
