Newbie here, looking for a truck. I have been looking at various age F350 V10s. I have had numerous people say "run" as they blow spark plugs. Now with most things there are misconceptions/misinformation, though I have seen some V10 bashing associated with spark plugs blowing out. I have also heard 3 valves took care of this in @2005 model years, once again real info or?. I searched the site but can't seem to come up with my main questions:
Is a V10 reliable and what years should I consider and/or which are problematic?
Thanks much!
There is a V10 section in here further down on the forums list. You might have a stab at searching there and/or posting there too. I am not super familiar with the V10 nuances but I do remember reading something about early year 10's did blow spark plugs or something along those lines. I do believe around 05' that issue was fixed.
I have an 05' V10 and it runs like a scalded cat. They are fantastic motors. If you do get one, the FiveStar Tuner is basically a must! If not for the additional giddy-up, get it for the throttle response! http://www.5startuning.com/index.html They are a sponsor of this board too. Good guy!
I have now posted on my limited knowledge on the subject.
There isn't a single year V10 I'd tell someone that wants one to stay away from. I love my 99 even though it has the least power and is at risk for spark plug blowout. The risk for that is only as big as you make it. With proper care you'll probably never blow one. I have over 130k and almost spit one but its been good for about 10k now.
99s don't have PI heads
00-02 have PI heads but still at risk for plug blowout
03-04 have PI heads and addressed the issue with the plugs
05-current have 3V heads and no issues with the plugs
I've never driven one but I hear that the 05+ are an incredible difference from previous years thanks to the TorqShift tranny and the 3V motor.
Keep in mind that folks have a tendency to express their concerns & problems more often than their success stories. Do some Ford Triton modulars spit out spark plugs? Yes, without a doubt. But, I think that the if someone could actually track the number of occurrences vs. the number of motors, that the resulting failure percentage would be very, very low.
If you decide to go with a V10 and you are concerned about this, you can easily do a bit of preventative maintenance to help ensure that you are never a victim.
Thanks all, I did re-post this in the V10 section....stupid Newbie posted in the wrong spot.....but I am getting great answers and as I suspected some of the horror stories are just that...stories....The 2004 F350 crewcab I have found would be a winner but it has a short box, much rather have the 8' box, just use to hauling full sheets of plywood, etc...thanks again!
