Im new here, and I need some help. I have a 1996 Ford Bronco with the 351 w and a e4od trans. When accelarating it shifts at 1,000 rpms, which is way to early. It also shifts down and then back up repeatedly. And sometimes doesnt want to shift at all when at speeds above 25mph. I replaced the throttle positioning sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, and the manual shift modual that has the shift linkage on the side of the tranny. I adjusted the timing a bit (to Chilton manual specs.) after I put in the throttle sensor, but I dont think that caused the problem. any ideas?
First of all Welcome to FTE. The knowledge and assistance here has exceeded my expectations on many challenges. First of all I would suggest you pull the codes. The 1996 model changed to a different system. Like you, I have also found a happy engine makes for a happier transmission. You did not mention a fluid change so you may want to replace the fluid and filter. Drain the torque converter also for about 16 qts.
I'm sure others will be along with more suggestions.
Sorry. Forgot to mention, the fluid has been changed. It just seems to be doing it since I adjusted the timing, and I don't understand why that would mess up the transmission shifting.
you cant adjust the timing on a 96 obd-II system like you would on an older system. for a 95 and older bronco you must unplug the spout connector to set the base timing. with obd-2 it doesnt have this feature so i suggest you move the dizzy back to where it was at.
also you replaced those parts but did they need replaced? did you pull codes and the codes pointed to issues with those?

what size tires are you running?
I replaced them cause I thought that was causing the problem. I have 33x10.5r15 BFG mud terrian tires. I tried to plug in the code reader, but the prongs on the bronco are a tad different than the ones on the code reader.
LOL, stop messing with the timing. it needs to be returned to its original spot. what are you setting the timing to by the way and how can you pull the spout connector when on the 96 there isnt one? also you need an obd-II scanner. the one you have must be for obd-I. you need to reprogram your PSOM on your speedo so it knows what size tires your running. those 33's are probably your problem. the e4od is sensitive to changes in tire size which will cause odd shift points because the speedo is off.
