I've recently done a distributor change and havent got to a timing light yet - I've driven the truck a few times and I've noticed that the temperature gauge is a little bit higher, not in the "Danger" zone but enough to drive me nuts.
Question: Could the timing not being correctly set or the carb not tuned properly cause the truck to run a little hotter?
In my head full of vast knowledge about these trucks (2 months worth ) it seems that it WOULD, but I Just wanted to check.
I did a radiator flush tonight just because it needed it anyways and I was hoping it would fix it, but it didnt.
From what I can gather in my Chilton book the timing should be...6B and idle should be about 550
I'll get that all ironed out tommorow night and see if that helps it.
I went to see a mechanic buddy lastnight and had the truck timed properly and it didnt fix the temp problem. He told me it was most likely the radiator so we drained it enough to see the fins and some of the fins are clogged, but not all.
I had a hunch it was just the thermostat by now so I went and got one this morning. I didnt know what to put in it since it HAD a 195 in it - I tired a 160 and it fixed the problem.
My only question now is the temp gauge isnt in the middle, it's just before it - is that bad?

You need to install a mechanical gauge and get an actual temp. reading. The stock gauges are prone to going wacky, especially after 35+ years. It could also be a bad ground which is causing the temp gauge to fluctuate. Turn the truck on and get it warm then hit the lights and see if it moves the gauge any. Also, putting in a 160 tstat isn't going to help you in the long run. So install a mechanical gauge and post your results.
