Opossum is correct.
Possum is a common name here in the States but it actually refers to the species in Australia and surrounding places.
The opossum and the possum are actually two different animals, although closely related.

Woodsmoke has it right. Where I come from if you said "opossum" everybody would know you were from someplace far away. Also tater is the correct pronounciation for potato, skeeter for mosquito,Tiota for Toyota, poke for polk (as in poke salad), and the list goes on. If you have more questions about common word mispronounciations, woodsmoke or myself can probable help.
