Drilling a hole through a cement wall...

Hey there guys n gals.

Im looking to install a outside water tap on the walkout part of our house. We have a insulated concrete form basement (ICF) and I believe I will have to drill a 1 inch hole through the foam and cement filled block. (blocks have 8 inches of cement in the middle with 2 inches of foam on each side, so the total width i would need to drill through is about 12 inchs)

Im unsure of how to do this, can anyone steer me in the proper direction?

For a hole that big it would be best to use a hammer drill. I believe you can rent them at any rental place for around 35.00 a day plus the concrete bit.
I'm pretty sure they don't make a concrete bit that big for a regular 1/2 drill.

I do have a hammer drill, but I believe it is a 1/2 inch one too.

I was hoping to buy what I need, but renting might be an idea.

Do you have a home hardward near you? If so they rent large bosch hammer drills, you'll want some substantial for doing what you are doing, not sure if your drill is just one of the small type that you can put it to hammer or not but if it is you'll be at it for a long time with that sucker!

I vote for renting a hammer drill...shouldnt take more than 10 minutes to drill it

you could use your own hammer drill with a 1 inch masonry bit and an extension...

I would drill a 1/4 inch pilot hole...your concrete is still fairly green and you might get lucky.

Rent a hammer drill. Shouldn't take you that long. PUll the bit out from time to time as you're drilling to clear out the cement dust.

If you're drilling from the outside, point the bit up a little so your hole slopes towards the outside. That way when you close the valve in fall, there won't be any water left in there.

It's also a good idea to pick up the outside faucet when you're renting the tool, so you can make sure you have the right sized bit, and check that it fits in the hole before you bring back the tool. I have Pex plumbing in my house, and the pex faucet was quite large.

make sure you put a shut off valve inside too...for winterization!

you might have to remove some insulation temporarily if you cant get a 12" long bit...

Actually what you want is called a Rotary Hammer. It is a different tool from a hammer drill.

Rental is the best for occasional use.

Rotary hammer is the only way to go for what you want to do. A 1/2 inch hammer drill is not. Shouldn't take long at all and you're much better off renting as the hammer and the bits are usually very expensive. When I worked for the road dept. I could drill 30 holes like that in a pretty short amount of time. Make sure you use a frost proof silcock. They even make ones now that won't break if you leave the hose hooked up and it freezes.

Drill a small pilot hole throuth the wall first. Next drill most of the way from one side with the 1" bit, then go to the other side and drill the rest of the way through. If you don't you are likely to blow a big chunk of concrete and foam off as the big bit breaks through.

Thanks for all the advice fellas!

My woman bought the tap already, and we have a shut off for the inside. Also great tip about sloping the tap, which I was gonna do anyways (I do alot of sloping when I dig trenches and whatnot, and I know how important that is)

Looks like my cheap *** has gotta go rent something!

well...you could go spend $1000 on a rotary drill and bits and only use it once

Pilot holes are not necessary, or recommended with concrete bits. The tip of the bit does most of the chipping. Drill a pilot hole and you lose this effect with the larger bit.

You'll want to use a coring bit.....more or less the masonry equivalent of a hole saw.
