Marriages in Texas fall under what is called the "Community Property Law.: Unless there is s pre-nup, property is divided equally. If you have kids, she gets child support in a divorce unless you get the kids, which is rare in Texas. No alimony in this state. jd

There are provisions for alimony in Texas...

2. spouses in ten-year marriages who can't support themselves.

the duration of the marriage was 10 years or longer, the spouse seeking maintenance lacks sufficient property, including property distributed to the spouse under this code, to provide for the spouse's minimum reasonable needs, as limited by Section 3.9605, and the spouse seeking maintenance
(A) is unable to support himself or herself through appropriate employment because of an incapacitating physical or mental disability;
(B) is the custodian of a child who requires substantial care and personal supervision because a physical or mental disability makes it necessary, taking into consideration the needs of the child, that the spouse not be employed outside the home; or
(C) clearly lacks earning ability in the labor market adequate to provide support for the spouse's minimum reasonable needs, as limited by Section 3.9605. Family Code § 3.9602(2).

pre-marital property is generally off the table, even in the land of fruits and nuts (CA), but any appreciation is not (and conversely, depreciation)

In North Carolina ANYTHING thats acquired during the marriage is a 50/50 split except inheritance. Anything that someone leaves you in their will belongs just to you and the spose cant touch it. Things like pensions have to be split.

As of yet I have not seen a clear cut set of laws that define how things should go that a lawyer cannot work around and change to suit the one who is fighting the hardest with the best and have enough money to back the play. It did not always go to the one that should have. If you have ever seen any thing any different it more than likely said “Produced by Walt Disney Studios”, for any others all I can say is WOW! You were lucky.

Disclaimer: My views are not intended to favor one gender over the other; I have realistically seen the door swing both ways. I have said before that stupidity does not follow a color code; neither does it follow a gender.
