On a 1960 F100, what is the purpose of the piece of sheet metal, bent into a 90 degree angle that goes across the top of the radiator support from side to side, and if the hood were in place would be covered by the hood? It is held in place by tiny little rectangular fasteners that do not come out but rather twist so this piece can be removed. I imagine it has something to do with plugging a void and directing air through the radiator. I didn't realize it was removable until after I buggered it up getting the engine out. I can straighten it, but want to know what it is first.
Yeah, it looks like that one that the right side arrow is pointing to for number 16138. It hasn't had a rubber seal since I got the truck almost a year ago. I figured it had something to do with blocking air or aiming it. I'll hang onto it in case I need it but when I get it all back together I'll hold off on putting it in place until I know it's necessary.
Thanks.
Maybe this will help identify the part. I think you're talking about the horizontal part infront of the radiator support, part of part group 16138:
A better pic of the radiator support and the corresponding seals are shown in the 1957/60 grille illustration (section 82.1, page 2 in my parts catalog).
I didn't realize it was removable until after I buggered it up getting the engine out.
I'm sorry to know it was buggered up, but you've performed a great service in saying so. This is because I am getting ready to rebuild the 223 in my 1960, and with your tale fresh in mind, I first removed that air deflector!
