I've got a 2002 Excursion, 7.3 PSD, that I use frequently for towing a 9,000 lbs loaded toyhauler. The Ex has 86,000 miles on it now, but when I bought it used it only had 75,000 on it, which came primarily from run around to the store and back type driving, and very little towing. It's had all the routine services done to it with the exception of the transmission, it's never had the trans serviced. Since I am using it for heavy towing and am planning to two cross country and back next summer, I've been told it would be a good idea to get an external transmission cooler. I don't know alot about that sort of thing, which is why I've posted here, to seek advice from people in the know. Any suggestions or recommendations. Thank you.
You already have two, one in the rad and one external.
The external one is pretty small, for what it's asked to do. One of the most common trans cooler upgrades us 7.3L guys do is to swap in a 6.0L trans cooler. They are much, much bigger than the ones that came on the 7.3's.
I have one on my Excursion and I just bought one off of Craigslist for my truck.
I'm in the middle of replacing the tiny stock cooler on my '00 7.3 with the 31-row cooler from an '04 F350 6.0. We've boiled the trans twice with the stock cooler: once into Yellowstone's northeast portal from Red Eagle towing a 28 foot travel trailer, and last month in the Adirondacks towing a 26 footer. This is an easy swap so far.
If you add on an aftermarket unit, remember to protect it. If you catch a rock in the trans cooler, then you will be standing beside the road in the 97F heat waiting on the towtruck.

Hey i see you boiled your transmission twice in an old post..mine just did that..did you fix it with just adding a bigger cooler or did u have to rebuild it.Mine was leaking from the front seal...I know this is an old post but just boiled the 7.3 excursion.
Is it posible to install to big of a trany cooler? I have one O bought for my RV, but never installed it. Thinking about outting it on my Ex since I already have the front bumper and grill out (doing the 05 front end conversion).

Here's a pic so you can see the difference.

Ok I know I'm easily confused but I've heard people say how tiny the older cooler compared to the one from the 6.0..............but in that pic it doesn't look much smaller

The ones on the right side is 2 stacked on top of one another. The top is from the 7.3L and the bottom is V10.
Someone on here recently installed the 6.0 cooler and added a thermostat to it as well. I don't have a link but it's fairly recent. His tests showed great results. Keeps the trans cool, but it also keeps it warm enough when driving solo in winter.
