I did the 6.0 cooler and this gauge, both of which are a necessity in my opinion ...

That website has it half correct.

A few years back, brand new 6.0L trans coolers were selling on ebay for $160 to $180 bucks, every day.

The price on them now is ridiculous.

I paid $280 for mine not including shipping from tousely ford.

Also you can add a derale thermostat to help keep the temp around 180*. The the 6.0 cooler tends to work a little too good in the winter time. I rarely saw my temp above 140* without the derale thermostat then when I installed it my temps went to 180* not towing but when towing the highest I got to was 210*. If you install a derale t-stat put the one with 1/2" hose fittings. When I get the chance I will swap out mine for the 1/2" one.

Kinda sorta on topic. Any opinions on the V10 cooler, I can get an after market one for under $100 from rockauto. I believe I have the original transmission on my 2001 with 160k on it, I'd hate to spend $400 for a cooler to have the transmission fail and have to replace it again. I've never had the transmission go above 185 with the existing cooler but plan on doing some towing through the mountains this summer. The V10 cooler looks about 50% bigger than the 7.3 cooler

You have the same cooler as I did on my 5.4, when I towed in the mountains before my 6.0 cooler my trans temp went to 255 and I had to slow down to cool it , Since my 6.0 cooler install I have not seen trans temps over 195.. I am not sure about the rock auto one but I subscribe to the you get what you pay for idea..

My guess would be Stewart is refering to the article's discussion about larger trans pans aiding cooling. They really don't, larger trans pans only hold more oil, that extra oil may give you a short amount of extra time till you see high trans temps during high demand situations but it's the cooler that does the cooling. The cooler also has to cool those extra quarts that the deeper pans hold.
The factory 6.0 cooler's plate type design is superior to the typical aftermarket tube and fin style coolers. I know you earlier said we were crazy for using the expensive 6.0 coolers but that little bit of extra cost is peanuts compared to a rebuild of the 4R100. My trans is due for a flush in about 4k miles, at that time I plan to add the 6.0 cooler and the Derale thermostatic control valve along with fresh Mobil 1 fluid. Will these items absolutely prevent a trans failure? No, but they give me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that I've added high quality, proven parts and supplies to help protect my trans when I'm pulling long mountain grades with the camper in the Summer time with my family. Also our resident former Ford transmission engineer Mark K. has stated that adding an additional cooler inline with the factory unit may not be a good idea due to possible flow restrictions that could actually hurt trans cooling.
I'm just offering my opinions. Your rig, your money, your call.

You would have to add that in series with the stock cooler and it still would not be good enough
