I was working on my 79 shortbed 4x4 and went to replace the distributor. It was the last thing on the truck not refurbed or new. I had bought the motor assembled by someone else with a few hundred miles on it a few years back, 400m. I was carefull in pulling the distributor out , but still managed to pull the oil pump drive shaft lose. All I can think of is that the metal ring that supposed to stop this from happening was not there. So after I dropped the pan and re positioned the drive shaft the distributor dropped in. It was close to where I had marked it, but could have been a tooth off. The truck fired right up. When I went to put the timing light on it- the marks are about directly on the bottom of the balancer- not up at the timing piointer. Seeing how the truck runs good and I had timed by ear- will this affect anything- is the cause that I am a tooth off? I really dont want to pull the distributor back out. Please let me know what you think?
If you do wind up pulling the distributor back out and that shaft comes out again - it's possible to drop it back in place with a magnet and some patience - I have a pretty powerful little magnet on the end of a pick-up tool I used to lower the shaft down into the hole then I used a street-sweeper bristle to guide the lower end into the oil pump - once it's in place, you can use a socket (I forget what size) on an extension to turn the shaft to make sure it's seated and turning the pump...
After I initially pulled the shaft out, I didn't seem to have any problems with it afterward and I had to pull and reposition the distributor a few times before I got it right...
Thanks, I hope not to go through that again, but will give it a try if I need to. As far as timing- I have always heard that once you put an aftermarket cam in, you use the marks just to get in in the ball park. I have no idea what the specs are on the cam, or if it has been advanced off the timing gear. Would it be smart to start all over again- pull the distributor out and start at TDC on the number 1 cyclinder?
