95 Remote Ignition Modules
Various threads here have discussed previously the ignition modules being sold for 94-96 F150s and related trucks. I do not wish to start another debate about aftermarket parts or what is being sold. I only wish to share my experience and solution, and if it helps you that's great.
I bought a remote ignition module for my 1995 F150 with 5.0L from Advance Auto. They have been great to me. I thought with them selling Borg Warner parts now that I would get the correct module. It was a BWD CBE33. This translate to a Motorcraft DY1075. It ran my truck, caused no CEL. But a scan of the computer showed a DTC of 221. In other threads it stated as DTC 226. This is a loss or missing IDM signal, a difference of pin 4 on module. And this causes an inability of ECU to control timing and default to 10* BTDC. I returned it. Diagrams of the circuits for these modules and more discussion can be found with a search. I soon realized that it didn't matter where I went, I was going to get a Motorcraft DY1075, or its cross referenced part in BWD, AC Delco, Delphi, Airtex, etc. The applications guides all said 90-96 use same remote module.
I entered an order to Ed Olson, Parts Manager, PartsGuyEd.com at Millenium Ford in Seattle, WA. I had previously bought a Motorcraft EGR and a VSS from him. He went out of his way to research this Ignition Module and reassure me that I would get the correct part. We had several phone calls. I sent pictures and the PN on my module. My original was a Motorcraft black module with PN F1SF-12A297-C1A. This was re-engineered and updated to PN 5U2Z-12A297-D in Ford documentation and this translated to a Motorcraft DY1077 which isn't listed for a F150 with 5.0L; even in the latest Motorcraft catalog on-line. I installed the part today, it started; ran it through warmup cycle, drove and no codes only the good 111. If you try to buy a DY1077 or equivalent PN at an auto store local or net, it wouldn't be listed for an 94-96 F150. A BWD is cross reference to their CBE40, but listed as not applicable. Many on-line stores use generic photos; which only cause more confusion.
Many thanks to one of our vendors, PartsGuyEd, Ed Olson, for exceeding my expectations. I got the part I needed and at a great price. I hope this helps someone else here get the correct module; unless you run a scan of your ECU you won't know that you don't have the correct one; the public info on these modules is misleading. I put a couple of pix of the modules in my gallery.
