Duraspark ll Electronic Ignition Module.

Installed Duraspark ll in the 65, no longer getting a spark and after probing the ignition coil and connectors without frying any wires realized I do not have a clue on how to test the unit decided to replace the module, checked and local part stores no longer test them.

Replaced the coil DG-314 (D5AZ-12029-A) couple weeks ago. Test primary circuit 3.6 ohms, and 9.0 ohms for the secondary circuit?

Did some cyber shopping and came up with a couple options: Either purchase a Motorcraft DY893 on Ebay, which I believe is correct for my application but seem to recall members mentioning no longer manufactured in the US; or, the local parts store (CarQuest), carry Borg Warner replacement module, blue insulator, stamped made in US? Thought I would check if member's are familiar with either?

Comments appreciated!

I greatly appreciate the 'how to' diagrams, and description of the DSll components and circuits! I did some cyber searching and found Autozone website has a fairly thorough 'trouble shooting' article on DSll; however, seemed a bit difficult for me to follow. The information U posted appear basic enough even I should be able to follow, looking forward in trying to diagnose tomorrow?

Again, I thank you!!

Thank you Bill, appreciate your input, I use them as a great source in seeking replacement parts. In this case, appears to me it comes down to deciding whether to purchase a component described as 'made in Mexico', or another where the manufacturer claims the item is made in USA? Intend using ultraranger's post in effort to diagnose the problem, I am in the 'get rid of stuff' mode and do not need any additional spare components.

Again, I thank you!

Duraspark/Mopar

I gave up on those no spark durasparks 25 years ago. Switch over to a Mopar controller and you won't be disappointed. Click on the Performance Distributors link at the top of this page and you will find that they use Mopar boxes with the Duraspark. They come in all flavors from street to 12000 rpm. And they are perfectly happy wired up to a Duraspark distributor.

I usually run the Chrome box on the street but for test runs and to have a spare I just use this Summit box.

Thanks so much Ultraranger for the troubleshooting diagrams!!
I have never had an ignition module fail either genuine ford or cheapie parts store clone. I've always found some other culprit, usually wiring (bad/loose connection).

For the RPM range of a truck, I don't need a high revving ability. All I want is reliability, and so far have not been disappointed by Duraspark.

I agree with above. I have a complete Performance distributors system and it is fantastic. Daily driven, year round, along with a few out of state trips and not one problem with the ignition. It's been installed for 6 or 7 years now.

Yo Crop Duster, that be lookin mity fine!! Was not aware one could mix and match Electric Ignition components. Installed Duraspark ll in both 65's many years ago with no problems. The 65 I am currently having a problem with had been collecting dust in the elements over a period of several years, finally worked out the bugs and running fine until couple days ago, no spark? These ole bones have not decided whether to commit to keeping the truck and go thru another restoration/reconditioning project; meantime, intend using ultraranger's info to try and diagnose the problem and get it back on the road.

They are great systems. I've had three of their complete kits over the years. One in a 5.0 and two in 429 CJ's and since they build each distributor for your own engine combination it's just a matter of opening up the plug gaps, setting the initial and getting on the road. Never had a problem with any of their stuff. That little 5.0 would bounce off of a 7000 rpm chip and never miss a beat.

Got as far as the 2nd page of the diagnostic work sheet; Part 2, Test 7, and appears the problem was not with the module, which keeps on a tickin over these many years, but rather the distributor. Found I was unable to get an ohm's reading at all. Pulled the distributor, noticed the mounting surface and distributor housing had some serious surface rust, cleaned both, wiggled a couple wire, and cleaned the stator, reinstalled the distributor and tested; O' my, got a reading. Reassembled harnesses, set timing, and Zoom-Zoom. The work sheet, wire wheel and sand paper saved me the cost of a replacing the module?

Again, I thank you!!
