Cleaning upper plenum

I had my 97F150 in for work at the Ford dealership and they said it needed an upper and lower intake cleaning. They said they use BG products and it is a 3 step process which one step is to clean the throttle body.I asked them about the decal saying do not clean or will remove factory coating on the throttle body. They said they do it all the time. So,in order for me to save the 169.00 they want for the job,any suggestions on what i can use/do to clean it?I have used CRC Throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush before on my 93 F150 and it did wonders.Any suggestions?

I used STP air intake anf throttle body clearner on my '92 F-150 302 and a lot of scrubbing and it runs great now. You could also try Sea Foam. I have heard it works great. Hope this helps.

Actually, BG makes an air plenum cleaner (in a spray can) that is made for the job, and is an excellent product. It's a bit more expensive than the standard 'carb cleaners', but a lot of mechanics like it.

I've used it in the upper plenums of a Mazda turbo and my '93 Ford.

I would think twice about using standard carb cleaners though.

Best,

Sea Foam works wonders. I try to use it about every oil change. You can put it in the oil to clean out the crankcase, the gas to clean the injectors, or suck it straight through the intake manifold. with the fueil injected models, the best way I've found is to disconnect the power brake booster hose, and with about 1/3 of a can of sea foam, stick the hose into the bottle, and let the engine stall out. Then let it sit for about 5 minutes, then crank it up and drive it for a few miles. It will smoke like crazy for the first bit, and may ping some too, but afterwards, you should notice a big difference, especially if you run the engine only at lower rpm's (3,000 or less). It's worked well for me, and a bottle's not that expensive, so it's worth a shot. The throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush works well for the throttle body. When I do that I always open the butterfly valves (engine off) and spray some of the throttle body cleaner into the upper intake manifold to get some of that carbon loosened up.
