My truck is a 92 f140 with a 4.9 300. I want to clean the throttle body so it runs better however, I once took a one off a 5.8 and it had a tag on it that said "Do not clean with cemicals". I think because of the special plating it had on the inside? Anyways would it be ok to clean mine on the 4.9 with chemicals? Or is it not a good idea? Thanks.
shouldnt have a problem with chemicals like carb cleaner or brake cleaner. dont use anything like wd40 on it though. clean it with carb cleaner, but let it dry for a bit before starting your engine.
You don't want to use Brake Cleaner or Berryman's B-12 because they contain Acetone. That will strip off the coating for sure. You can do it, I have, and no catastrophy will result, you just have to clean it more often in the future. What you should use is "throttle body cleaner" and an old toothbrush. Valvoline's works particularly well for me.
WD40 isn't going to do it any harm IMO, it only contains kerosene, and not very much of it, but it probably isn't going to clean it very well, either.
they tell you not to lubricate and/or clean them cause they can get stuck in the open or cloded position. im not sure what exactly the coating is in the TB but i bet its to keep carbon from sticking where they dont want it... like in the mechanisms...
